Blogs about: Music

Trance. Rock. CountryJazz. Classical. Latin. One woman’s noise is another woman’s music. Once upon a time, we went to record stores to sift for new artists or albums. Now we click our mouses on a “play” button — over and over — until we find something we like. Then, we plug portable music players into computers, load ‘em up with tunes, and off we go (or we stay at our desk, headphones on, drowning out office noise). The way we listen to music may have radically changed in the last decade, but the song remains the same: We’re melodic creatures, responding emotionally and physically to the lull of a siren’s heartache or the strum of a guitar.

The Last Public Appearance For Amy Winehouse
Froyo Nation Blog

So Amy Winehouse was found dead at her London home yesterday Saturday, July 23,2011 at about 4:00 pm. The reasons behind her death are still unknown, and police are treating the case as “unexplained”. Here’s the press release.. “Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased. On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene.” Her last public appearance was at the iTunes festival. She appeared on stage to help promote her protégé and goddaughter Dionne Bromfield’s new album. Last month, Winehouse canceled her European tour after a performance in Serbia after being booed off stage for being too drunk to perform. Check out pictures of the incident here

27 and Dead…
Paul's Voyage of Discovery & Etc.

By BEN SISARIO Published: July 23, 2011  Amy Winehouse, the British singer who found worldwide fame with a smoky, hip-hop-inflected take on retro soul, yet became a tabloid fixture as her struggles with drugs and alcohol brought about a striking public career collapse, was found dead in her home in London on Saturday. She was 27. For many rock and roll fans who saw such reports about the sudden death of Amy Winehouse – one fact jumped right out: her age. 27-years old. As of this writing, the cause of her death is not known. The London police said that, “at this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.” But nobody will be surprised to learn that the artist who hit the charts singing, “They tried to make me go to rehab, but I said ‘no no no’” probably succumbed to her addictions. Thus, we add Amy Jade Winehouse (September 14, 1983 to July 23, 2011) to the list of rock stars that died at 27 years of age. The list got started early – with the death of the pioneering blue

Spotify
Digifiend

I really like Spotify, I understand why there is so much hype about it.  That hype is well deserved. I’ve been on other cloud based music services and all of them had at least one thing that made me go back to collecting mp3s.  Last.fm had a somewhat limited catalog, Slacker was the same.  The main deterrent always seems to be the fact that although I could skip songs on playlists, I couldn’t choose specific songs.  It was almost like a mandatory party-mix mode with no repeat functionality. The Spotify catalog is impressive enough that I can forgive the few holes I found.  I quickly found music I hadn’t heard in years (Wire – Pink Flag album for example) which made me smile  And the best part of the service is that I can easily choose specific versions of songs to play immediately. Another thing that I think has been done well in this roll-out of Spotify is the ability to actively tie into today’s social networking apps. Facebook users can easily tie into

I’m on fire!

… but not particularly happy about it.  I sat in the sun enjoying live music at Pleasant Hill’s annual Blues and Brews Festival, and wore an above-the-knee skirt.  After this - Ouch! - I remembered why (in the past) I owned several longer, cotton skirts with prints inspired by India.  So at my husband’s urging I nipped out of the festival and headed over to Salvation Army’s thrift shop where I found this - Ann Taylor Loft cotton tiered skirt with ruffles - which looks pretty decent on despite having ruffles and lacking said Indian flavor. I’m home and slathered with cooling agent at the moment, though was hoping to get back to the community park in time to enjoy The Tommy Castro Band, which I’ve never seen performing live.  Sigh.  Well, I’m sure there will be other fests, and I’m sadder but wiser about garb.

Me & Amy

So to say I was shocked, is possibly the greatest understatement of all time. Amy Winehouse died today, a sentence that seems unreal to say aloud. And makes my hands shake a little while typing. A lot has been said already about Amy, about her addictions and demons . And to a lesser extent, but still mentioned her award winning albums. People not really into Amys music find it easy to make callas remarks about her substance abuse. Which in all fairness were it another artist I know I would and have done the same . But it isn’t , it’s Amy . All I can do is tell you what she means to me and will always mean to me . And hopefully this will make me feel a touch better. Frank her debut is such an important record for me . The tracks are like a war cry for modern woman hood . Fuck me pumps, a funny clever take on the idiotic nature of wags and the like. Stronger than me, wanting to not have to be in control of the relationship. Help yourself a story of being there for a demon bat

My favorite champion showdowns part 1
manila sunshine

here’s one for the good old days. this is one of my favorite champion showdowns ever! the songs picked were perfect and they were all meshed flawlessly. this was shown on independence day and they picked songs from iconic opm singers. mark sang love without time by nonoy zuniga, rachelle with even if by jam morales (from gma supershow precursor to asap and sop), erik with shadow of time by raymond lauchengco, sarah with let the pain remain by basil valdez and they all sang a million miles away by joey albert in the end. the champs all brought their a-game to this production. everyone sang beautifully. (okay, the only downside to this one is the matchy-matchy, singing-cooks-and-waiters outfit of mark and rachelle. who styled them? sarah and erik didn’t need to match to make their duet work. peace!) and btw, if you’re looking for a night of music from iconic singers (both local and international), you might want to see this one: With special guests Angeline Quinto (Star

Amy Winehouse – the losing game
tchaikovsky's guitar

Amy Winehouse didn’t move, touch or particularly excite me. She wasn’t constantly on my iPod, she won’t be now and I will not spend days in mourning for the loss of a friend. I did however enjoy the sound and rhythm of her voice. Many words will be written this weekend about the sad and wholly unnecessary death of Amy Winehouse. Many will be written by ‘friends’ and my by those seeking to build a reputation through association. I can neither claim nor be accused of either. Simply; I own and have thoroughly enjoyed both Amy Winehouse albums and have often been cheered and moved by her music. Much of Back to Black reaches me as honestly and emotionally as Blood on the Tracks or Low. It is an album of genuine feeling and whole hearted experience, and a modern pop novelty in that the lyrical and musical content are synchronous – literally singing from the same hymn sheet. Frank, too, contains human songs, broken songs, fragile songs, songs that allow roo

RIP Amy Winehouse
This Gaudy Gilded Stage

Today the world wasn’t shocked to learn that Amy Winehouse had died. Her troubles with alcohol and drugs had been very public and publicized for the past few years. While I, like so many others, had hoped that she would conquer her addiction and return to recording, anyone who’d followed her public appearances in the past year or two could see that such hope was becoming less and less likely. Back to Black is an amazing album, and Winehouse’s talent will be remembered. She might even become this generation’s Janis Joplin or Jimi Hendrix. But it’s a terrible tragedy that this happened. Her talent shines through in this live video of my favorite of her songs, “Love Is a Losing Game,” as does her pain and sadness: Rest in peace Amy.

Big talent, too little time

Oh, for the time when I shall sleep Without identity. ~Emily Bronte First will come all the questions as to why this happened and how it could have happened. The editorial postmortems have a creature feature cause celeb now and you better believe they’ll run hard until the legs give out. Nothing is as self involved as the sensationalism of a big name dying young. This isn’t mystery theater we’re talking. If you had two minutes worth of knowledge on Amy Winehouse, you saw a day like today coming. If you were a fan, you hoped for better despite seeing all of the worst of her demons, usually on full display right alongside all her Grammys. She was something better than brilliant, different without the trying. It just happened that way with her. She came at you with this fantastic beehive hairdo out of the ’60s and then she’d start belting out tunes with this voice that seemed to have been stolen from jazz legend. She was a history lesson in fuck me pumps. I g

R.I.P Amy Winehouse
starmixjourney

On seeing Amy Winehouse for the first time I was primarily able to put the face to the extraordinary jazz inspired soulful music I had been hearing and subconsciously singing, in addition to acknowledging her trademark look of the beehive hairstyle.   Unfortunately the unforgettable singer/songwriter was found dead in her London home earlier today, with the suspected cause being her abuse of drugs and alcohol although not confirmed. The extent of this addiction was particularly made aware to the public in 2007 whereby her career was directly affected due to show cancellations, of which her father spoke publicly about. Nonetheless combinations of her relationship with on/off partner, deaths in her career she needed to contend with and paparazzi invasion didn’t help her overcoming these issues.   The many encounters that Amy Winehouse had to face positively presented themselves in her truthful lyrics, emotional songs and amazingly powerful vocals. As much as she may have been suffe
