Footbridge for Footscray station

FOOTSCRAY commuters will finally have a new railway station footbridge next year.

The State Government says work on the design for the Footscray station footbridge and a new station forecourt has begun and construction will begin in 2009.

The work is part of the Government’s $52 million Footscray Renewal Project announced in May last year.

Planning Minister Justin Madden revealed the timeline for the work in Parliament last Thursday in answer to a question from Western Metropolitan Labor MP Martin Pakula.

But, Mr Madden would not answer a similar question put to him by Greens Western Metropolitan MP Colleen Hartland in Parliament the day before.

Ms Hartland said that while it was good to know that design work on the footbridge had begun, she would not be happy until a start date had been set.

“I am going to keep asking the question until I see construction actually happening,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Government has not ruled out the undergrounding of Footscray Station as recommended by Sir Rod Eddington in his East West Needs Assessment transport report.

Government spokeswoman Sofia Dedes said the report required careful evaluation and consideration.

“The findings of the study are good news for Footscray. It recognises Footscray as a place of strategic importance to Melbourne, one that by virtue of its proximity to the city and the ports and its vibrant retail area will play a major role in the future development of Melbourne,” she said.

Public submissions on Sir Rod’s report are open until July 15.
