The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a private, nonprofit foundation dedicated to the growth and strengthening of democratic institutions around the world. Each year, with funding from the US Congress, NED supports more than 1,000 projects of non-governmental groups abroad who are working for democratic goals in more than 90 countries.

The Center for International Media Assistance released a new report on "Social Media in the Arab World: Leading up to the Uprisings of 2011." The report, written by Jeffrey Ghannam, an independent media consultant and journalist with experience in the Middle East, was commissioned several months before the unprecedented popular uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt, and other countries of the region.
