The deal to "fix" the federal debt ceiling crunch maintains the course of unsustainable spending by summarily ignoring the biggest and most wasteful items on the federal ledger. Among those: the Pentagon. Christopher A. Preble and Benjamin H. Friedman write that the package enables U.S. overseas military adventurism — little of which has anything to do with "defense" — to continue unchecked.
The Basel regime is an international system of capital adequacy regulation designed to strengthen banks' financial health and the safety and soundness of the financial system as a whole. In a new study, Kevin Dowd, Martin Hutchinson and Jimi Hinchliffe reassess of the Basel regime and identify three key weaknesses. "The Basel system," conclude the authors, "provides a textbook example of the dangers of regulatory empire building and regulatory capture, and the underlying problem it addresses — how to strengthen the banking system — can only be solved by restoring appropriate incentives for those involved."
