Tools and Services

Publishing Platform

ULS E-Journal Publishing uses Open Journal Systems (OJS), open source software, for the management of our journals.  Open Journal Systems  was created by the Public Knowledge Project, through its federally funded efforts to expand and improve access to research, and was released under the GNU General Public License.

OJS Features include reader and content discovery tools:

  • Persistent URLs
  • RSS feeds
  • OAI-PMH Harvesting
  • Metadata creation and cataloging
  • Ability to Bookmark and Share
  • Multilingual interface with support for languages
  • Journal statistics

Our initial and ongoing support and services include:

  • ISSN registration
  • Assignation of Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs)
  • Web site usage statistics
  • Consultation on editorial workflow and management
  • Assistance in gaining recognition as a scholarly journal
  • Press releases and publicity within the library community

For journals with an existing print run, we offer low-cost print runs with our Espresso Book Machine. The Espresso Book Machine offers greatly enhanced flexibility and cost savings over commercial print vendors, including the ability to order and print a single copy at a time.

Archiving and Preservation

This journal uses the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration.

Back Issues

For existing journals, we will work with you to host the back issues of your journal on your new e-journal Web site.

Journal Impact and Enhanced Discoverability

Impact factor is used to rank and evaluate scholarly journals. We will work with you to expose your journal metadata to OAI-PMH, EBSCO, SerialsSolutions®, and major search indexes to increase the exposure of your e-journal and enhance its impact factor. We will also assist you with submitting your e-journal to Thompson Reuters for assessment and assignment of journal impact factor. (For more information on impact factor, please visit the Thompson Reuters site.)

Your articles will be discoverable from a variety of Internet sources, enhancing the visibility of your e-journal as well as your potential readership. Your articles will be discovered via:

  • CrossRef
  • Aggregators
  • Indexes
  • Directories
  • Search engines
  • Metadata harvesters
  • Library collections
  • Databases
  • Twitter
  • Blogs
  • Etc.

OJS provides access to journal statistics, which can be a useful tool when evaluating your workflow and when marketing your journal. Statistics are tracked for each journal and include the number of:
