Johnson: Still To Peak

Posted on: Fri 05 Aug 2011

Roger Johnson prepares for his first official taste of the Wolves captaincy against Real Zaragoza tomorrow believing his peak is still ahead of him.

The summer signing will lead the team out for the final pre-season friendly hoping for more individual progress alongside the team's progress over the next few years.

"I'm supposedly peaking now - they say defenders peak from the age of 28 to 32 - so hopefully all four of those will be in the Premier League.

"I definitely see Wolves progressing in that time.

"The manager has done well to keep the best players here and he's brought more in.

"I'm sure he will bring in another one or maybe two.

"Off the pitch, the stands are going up and the club is moving in the right direction so I only see better times ahead.

"I do see us continuing to improve, but everyone has to stay fit, that's key.

"Being injury-free can be the catalyst of a good season for so many players.

"And we want to have a good go at it.

"There was only about 10 points between the whole of the bottom half of the table last season so there's definitely a chance to finish mid-table or in the top half.

"There's no reason why that can't happen at all."

And Johnson has moved to point out there is absolutely no problem with him and former captain Karl Henry, a view which has been echoed by the outgoing skipper.

"In the three seasons Karl has had the captaincy, the club has won promotion and stayed in the Premier League for the last two years, so they are big shoes to fill and he's a popular character," said Johnson.

"Hopefully I can do a good job and earn the respect of the boys.

"We've had a chat but I'll keep that in-house.

"There's no problem and I'm sure Karl's the same and there's certainly no beef between us.

"I like him and I'm sure we'll become friends.

"I know there's a picture of myself and him squaring up - when you play you do things in the heat of the moment, but when you meet them off the pitch, it's different."

"It's a results business - everyone wants to win and be in the best league in the world and you do everything in your power to make that happen.

"So you're going to get your fall-outs with the opposition and that will be taken out of the game."
