ENTRY FEES:

  • $1680 - Film with a production budget over $2 million ˆ
  • $1125 - Film with a production budget under $2 million ˆ

ˆ Films subject to pre-selection are required to pay 20% (non-refundable) of the fee at the time of entry, with the additional monies due for pre-selected films only.

In order to be eligible, a Feature Film must be:

  • an Australian production
  • a dramatised story of at least 70 minutes in duration
  • released in Australia for the first time between 7 October 2010 and 2 November 2011 in one of the following ways:
    • (direct eligibility) publicly exhibited during the Release Period for paid admission in a commercial cinema, for a run of at least seven consecutive days, in a minimum of five Australian capital cities - including Sydney and Melbourne; or
    • (pre-selection) publicly exhibited during the Release Period for paid admission in a commercial cinema, for a run of at least seven consecutive days, in a minimum of two Australian Capital Cities; with one city being Melbourne or Sydney.

Any production entered into the AFI Awards for a previous year is ineligible.

Documentary

ENTRY FEES:

  • $400 - Feature Length Documentary and Documentary Series
  • $350 - Documentary Under One Hour

In order to be eligible, a Documentary must be:

  • an Australian production
  • completed between 5 May 2010 and 24 May 2011
  • a Feature Length Documentary, means a single self-contained non-fiction film or Television Program (that is not a Documentary Series) longer than 60 minutes in duration, that is a creative treatment of actuality other than a news, current affairs, sports coverage, magazine, infotainment or light entertainment program.
  • a Documentary Under One Hour, means a self-contained non-fiction film or Television Program equal to or less than 60 minutes in duration that is a creative treatment of actuality other than a news, current affairs, sports coverage, magazine, infotainment or light entertainment program.
    or a:
  • Documentary Series, means a Television Program consisting of a potentially unlimited number of episodes but no less than 2 that is a creative treatment of actuality other than a news, current affairs, sports coverage, magazine, infotainment or light entertainment program.
  • in relation to Documentary Series, the Entrant may submit up to a maximum of two episodes; or 120 minutes of material whichever is the shorter.

Any production entered into the AFI Awards for a previous year is ineligible.

Short Fiction Film & Short Animation

ENTRY FEES:

  • $330 - Film over 20 minutes in duration
  • $200 - Film under 20 minutes in duration

In order to be eligible a Short Fiction Film or Short Animation must be:

  • an Australian production either,
    • a self-contained and continuous fiction or experimental film (Short Fiction Film) or
    • a self-contained and continuous animated film of fiction or documentary (Short Animation)
  • less than 40 minutes in duration
  • completed between 5 May 2010 and 24 May 2011
  • If a program is part of a series, a single program must remain self contained in respect of its content at all times.
  • the Entrant may submit up to a maximum of three programs from the one series provided that each of the programs otherwise complies with the rules relevant to that Award Category and remain self contained in respect of its content.
  • the AFI shall treat each program entered from the one series as a separate entry and a separate Fee shall apply to each entry.

Any production entered into the AFI Awards for a previous year is ineligible.

Television Drama Series

ENTRY FEE:

  • $1125 - Television Drama Series

Each Television Drama Series must enter two episodes for judging. These two episodes will be judged as a single entry for the "Best Television Drama Series" Award but as individual entries for all other Awards.

In order to be eligible a Television Drama Series must:

  • be an Australian production
  • be produced for television
  • have had the first episode of the entered series/season broadcast in Australia for the first time between 7 October 2010 and 2 November 2011
  • Television Drama Series means a Television Program that is a drama of a potentially unlimited number of episodes but no fewer than five episodes, comprising of either:
    • a series of self-contained stories, which can be screened in any order; or
    • a number of interweaving and overlapping plots continuing from one episode to the next.

Any production entered into the AFI Awards for a previous year is ineligible.

Television Comedy & Light Entertainment Series

Each Television Comedy Series and Light Entertainment Series must enter two episodes for judging. These two episodes will be judged as a single entry for the "Best Television Comedy Series" and "Best Light Entertainment" Awards but as individual entries for all other Awards.

In order to be eligible a Television Comedy Series and Light Entertainment Series must:

  • be an Australian production
  • be produced for television
  • have had the first episode of the entered series/season broadcast in Australia for the first time between 7 October 2010 and 2 November 2011

Television Comedy Series must be:

  • a situation comedy or sketch series comprising at least four substantially scripted episodes of no more than one television hour in length, of either
    1. self- contained stories or a continuing story with an ongoing plot and characters; or
    2. a series of unrelated sketches.

Light Entertainment Television Series must be:

  • a 'variety style', quiz or substantially non-scripted program, which comprises at least four episodes of no less than one half television hour in length.
  • this definition excludes news and current affairs programs.

Any series/season of a Television Comedy Series or Light Entertainment that has been entered into the AFI Awards for a previous year is ineligible.

Telefeature, Mini Series & Short Run Series

  • $1125 - Telefeature, Mini Series & Short Run Series

All eligible Telefeatures, Mini Series & Short Run Series must be:

  • Australian productions,
  • produced for television and broadcast in Australia for the first time between 7 October 2010 and 2 November 2011
  • unrelated to a Telefeature, Mini Series or Short Run Series entered in a previous year.
    (This does not disqualify a related Telefeature, Mini Series or Short Run Series from entering as a Television Drama Series).

Telefeatures must be:

  • a single, self-contained and continuous drama made for television
  • no less than one television hour in length or, in the case of predominantly animated programs, no less than one half television hour in length.
  • the entire production must be submitted for judging.

Mini Series must be:

  • a series of between 2 and 4 episodes of drama
  • less than 4 television hours in total length, wherein individual episodes are not less than one television hour or, in the case of predominantly animated programs, not less than one half television hour in length,
  • a complete dramatised story with ongoing interweaving and overlapping plots forming a single narrative.
  • two episodes must be submitted for judging.

Short Run Series must be:

  • a series of no more than 6 episodes of drama which is less than 6 television hours in total length.
  • individual episodes are not more than one television hour or, in the case of predominantly animated programs, not less than one half television hour in length.
  • consisting of a complete dramatised story with ongoing interweaving and overlapping plots forming a single narrative.
  • two episodes must be submitted for judging.

Children's Television

ENTRY FEES:

  • $1125 - Children's Drama Series, Children's Animated Series, Children's Mini Series, Children's Long Telefeatures.
  • $860 - Children's Telefeature Under 60 minutes in duration

All eligible Children's Television Drama and Children's Television Animation entries must be:

  • an Australian production,
  • produced for television and broadcast in Australia for the first time between 7 October 2010 and 2 November 2011

Children's Drama Series must be:

  • a drama made predominantly for viewing by children consisting of a potentially unlimited number of episodes but no fewer than five episodes, comprising either:
    1. a series of self-contained stories, which can be screened in any order; or
    2. a number of interweaving and overlapping plots continuing from one episode to the next.
  • the first episode in the current series/season must be broadcast for the first time between 7 October 2010 - 2 November 2011 to be eligible.

Each Children's Drama Series must enter two episodes for judging. These two episodes will be judged as a single entry for the "Best Children's Drama" Award but as individual entries for all other relevant Awards.

Children's Mini Series must be:

  • a series of between 2 and 4 episodes made predominantly for viewing by children which is less than 4 television hours in total length, wherein individual episodes are no less than one quarter television hour
  • a complete dramatised story with ongoing interweaving and overlapping plots forming a single narrative.
  • the entire Children's Mini Series must be submitted for judging

Children's Short Telefeature must be:

  • a single, self-contained and continuous drama made predominantly for viewing by children that is no less than one quarter television hour in length and no more than one television hour in length.

Children's Long Telefeature must be:

  • a single, self-contained and continuous drama made predominantly for viewing by children that is no less than one television hour in length.

Any production entered into the AFI Awards for a previous year is ineligible.
