Rudolf Hess, Adolf Hitler's Deputy, Bones Exhumed And Burned

Rudolf Hess

DAVID RISING   07/21/11 02:49 PM ET   AP

BERLIN — The bones of Adolf Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess were exhumed under cover of darkness, burned and secretly scattered at sea after his grave became a shrine for thousands of neo-Nazis, a cemetery official said Thursday.

Workers removed Hess' remains from his family's plot with the permission of his relatives, cremated the bones and dispersed them before dawn on Wednesday, said Andreas Fabel, a cemetery administrator in the Bavarian town of Wunsiedel.

Hess was captured in 1941 when he parachuted into Scotland saying he wanted to negotiate peace between Britain and Germany.

The attempt was denounced by Hitler, and Hess later told British authorities that the Nazi leader knew nothing of it. Hess, who spent the rest of his life as a prisoner of the World War II allies and since his death in 1987, became a martyr for the far-right. Neo-Nazis have used the anniversary of his death as an occasion to hold large rallies, with Wunsiedel – near the Czech border – often a focal point.

Most such rallies have been banned since stricter laws were implemented in 2005, but the grave continued to attract far-right extremists to the town.

With the lease on the burial plot coming up for renewal in October, Hess' relatives and Lutheran church authorities in the town decided it was best to remove the remains, Fabel said.

"Both sides were in favor of it," he said.

Charlotte Knobloch, a German Jewish community leader, said the move sends a "clear message."

"I'm happy that the Nazi shadow over Wunsiedel has finally come to an end," she said.

Holocaust survivors also welcomed the move.

"There is now one less place of evil in the world," said Elan Steinberg of the New York-based American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants.

Hess was an early confidant of Hitler's, and, while Hitler was imprisoned in the 1920s, the Nazi leader dictated much of his infamous manifesto "Mein Kampf," or "My Struggle," to him.

Hess eventually rose to the position of deputy Nazi party leader, but by 1941 his influence with Hitler was waning. His flight to Scotland is widely seen by historians as an attempt to restore his importance.

Instead, Hitler said he was delusional and the British treated him as a prisoner of war.

At the Nuremberg trials after the war, Hess was found innocent of war crimes and crimes against humanity, but sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against peace and conspiracy to commit crimes against peace.

Hess was the last inmate at Spandau Prison in then-West Berlin when he died on Aug. 17, 1987 at age 93. Allied authorities said he hanged himself with an electrical cord. The prison was demolished shortly afterward and the rubble secretly disposed of.

Sometimes those trendy left-wing dross are going too far. Grave robbery, disturbing the peace of a cemetery and a few other counts should be lined up against them.

They should never have allowed Rudolph Hess to be buried in a marked grave anywhere near Germany in the first place. This is correcting a 25 year old mistake.

I am posting the following as a general response to some of the misguided comments that have appeared regarding this article:

First of all, Obama is no Socialist.

Secondly, ever if he were, equating Socialism and National Socialism is ridiculously simplistic and intellectually dishonest.

Having a knee-jerk opposition to big gubment is also ridiculously simplistic.
What is really important is what a government does with its power.
Does it benefit the majority of citizens, or does it concentrate power and wealth in a small, elite minority?
This country is leaning very heavily in the direction of the latter, but not because of Obama -- this trend preceded him by decades.

The solution is not to severely limit government, thus letting the corporatists take over -- the solution is to get the government back on track building this country from within and benefiting the majority of American citizens so that they can lead decent lives.

In June of this year the leader of the Southern California Neo Nazi Party, was shot to death by his ten year old son. The family asked that his ashes be scattered in Arizona, where he had served as a border vigilanti. I note this because Nazi and fascists, in general, mythologize the fantasized and idealized past. Martyrdom, banners, uniforms, salutations, and pyric victorys long ago, are their sustenance when reality has come up short for them. The Birchers and tea baggers yearn for the good old days which weren't really there.

Rudolf Hess will always be a martyr for the ways the Allies treated him, during World War II, in the Nuremberg Trials Fiasco (which is every day becoming more of, and more obviously, a fiasco), for the nature of the trumpery-frumpery charges levied against him, for the ridiculous sentence of lifetime solitary confinement, for the vicious degree to which the sentence was carried out, for the peculiarity of his death "by suicide" at 93, as he frustratingly lived on and on and on, suddenly at a politically "opportune" moment, and most of all for the secretive ways everything about his career from his flight in 1941 through his being held incommunicado as well as solitary, from then, during the war and then on and on and on after, right through to and after his death.

It is not only "right wing" and "neo-nazi" elements who perceive Hess a martyr. There are very many who suspect and expect and credit that those who confined him and kept him silenced did so for nefarious reasons.

As the element of the French "Man in an Iron Mask" business remains intriguing and fascinating to historians, both researching and speculating, so will the Hess Mess remain to World War Two and Cold War Era historians, both researching and speculating.

The treating of Hess as he was treated was, is and will continue to be, catalyzing.

I have never really understood his trip to Scotland but being "sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against peace and conspiracy to commit crimes against peace" seems a bit strange considering how many others in the world could be convicted of the same so called crime. I do not know enough about the case to say whether his treatment was correct or incorrect, but I have always had doubts that have been reinforced now that I see what he was serving a life sentence for.

There must be 42 sites for extra public toilets in the USA then. Each with the likeness of a president at the bottom of the bowl.

Na. I don't think so. Maybe a couple like Nixon or Dubya. Wow. Am I talking to a real fascist? Are you a white guy with a shaved head and all? Gosh. How exciting! Wait til I share this story at the water cooler. I'll probably get laid with this story. What's with 1919 anyway? Is that the year Adolf discovered he suffered from extreme flatulism and decided to write a book (an important date in the fascist world I understand)?
