There's nothing worse than when a parent loses a child to kidnapping. But what if the kidnapper wants to be their new parent, and teach them everything they know about...murder? On August 30th, Anchor Bay Entertainment presents Stevan Mena's Bereavement on Blu-ray and DVD.

Doing something unordinary, yet very cool, below you'll find a behind-the-scenes DVD clip of the making-of the slaughterhouse scene from Stevan Mena's flick, along with a clip of the chilling final result! Only problem with all of these clips is that it's pretty misleading -- is a slow burn drama with some torture sequences. Be prepared.

The highly-anticipated prequel to the 2005 cult hit Malevolence, Bereavement stars Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, The Divide), John Savage (The Deer Hunter, The Godfather Part III, Hair, The Thin Red Line, Do The Right Thing), Alexandra Daddario and Brett Rickaby (The Crazies).

"In 1989, six-year-old Martin Bristol (Spencer List) was kidnapped from his backyard swing in Minersville, PA. Graham Sutter (Rickaby), a psychotic recluse, kept Martin imprisoned on his derelict pig farm, forcing him to witness and participate in unspeakable horrors. Chosen at random, his victim's screams were drowned out by the rural countryside.

Martin's whereabouts would have remained a mystery, until 17-year-old Allison Miller (Daddario) comes to live with her Uncle Jonathan (Biehn). While exploring her new surroundings, Allison discovers things aren't quiet at the farmhouse down the road. What started as an innocent exercise in satisfying her curiosity will soon disturb a hornet's nest of evil and despair. For everyone involved, there can only be two outcomes: bereavement or death!
"

Bonus features on the Bereavement Blu-ray and DVD include audio commentary by writer/director Mena, a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, and the theatrical trailer.

[Blu-ray Review] 'Dexter: The Fifth Season'
Posted August 8, 2011 @ 11:21

The third season of Showtime’s Dexter was a low-point for the series, carrying less conflict and more face-palming close calls than ever, so it makes sense that in a way, the fifth season is a redo. Deborah is still seconds behind America’s favorite serial killer as he allows his dark passenger to take hold, but it’s almost as if someone realized that having his partner-in-crime and enemy as the same character wasn’t as interesting as they hoped (Lord knows they tried by having Dexter kill Miguel Prado’s brother, causing the Assistant District Attorney to go AWOL), so they tried again by splitting them into two separate entities and casting the almost always enjoyable Julia Stiles as Lumen, his soul mate, pupil and quasi-replacement for Rita.

Hot on the heels of Image Entertainment's November 29 DVD and Blu-ray release announcement (full details) for Chillerama, we found two clips for Tim Sullivan's segment, I Was A Teenage Werebear, on his YouTube page. His tale, about gay teens who turn into werebears, looks Grease inspired. The film, as a whole, sounds like a blast and if it delivers on its promise, the anthology will "offer something for every bad taste."

It's the closing night at the last drive-in theater in America and Cecil B. Kaufman (Richard Riehle) has planned the ultimate marathon of lost film prints to unleash upon his faithful cinephile patrons. Four films so rare that they have never been exhibited publicly on American soil until this very night! What could possibly go wrong?

[DVD Review] 'Deadtime Stories: Volume 1'
Posted August 8, 2011 @ 10:36

I’m confused. I usually turn to IMDb.com to look up the nuts and bolts of a film when I write the review (you know; the actor’s names, producers, f/x artists ...). But this time my old reliable website has let me down. I streamed Deadtime Stories: Volume 1 from Netflix, where its listed as a 2011 release. But them IMDb.com has Volume One being released in 2009 and Volume Two being released in 2010, and the description of both volumes is different from the one I saw (Volume Two only has 2 of the 3 stories I saw). What the fuck people; is this really that hard to get straight? So for clarity’s sake, I’m reviewing the DEADTIME STORIES: VOLUME 1 that I streamed live from netflix. ‘Nuff said on the topic.

[DVD/Blu-ray Review] 'The Reef'
Posted August 8, 2011 @ 10:36

Now on DVD and Blu-ray from Image Entertainment is The Reef, a new shark horror story that's been getting mostly positive reviews and buzz from around the web. CaptainHowdy is close to being in agreement...

"Well worth watching. It has a strong tendency to engulf you in the experience, whether that means laughing with the characters or screaming at them for not getting ripped to shreds. Either way, you'll be feeling something pretty powerful."

I’ve always prided myself in not being into girly girl things. Well, sure, I like to dress up and look pretty, but throw me a good male humor dominated joke - and I will laugh. Plus, I listen to a lot of metal. Combine these two things into a show and you have a program I am now in love with. Todd & The Book of Pure Evil.

The series premiered on the Canadian Space Channel last year, and was picked up by Fearnet here in the US and made its debut this last Tuesday...

Trailer for Lionsgate's 'The Presence'
Posted August 2, 2011 @ 6:09

A hauntingly romantic ghost story arrives this fall as Lionsgate releases The Presence on DVD, Digital Download and On Demand on October 4. Starring Oscar winning actress Mira Sorvino (Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Mighty Aphrodite, 1995), the film also features Justin Kirk (Showtime's "Weeds") and Shane West (A Walk to Remember). Written and directed by Tom Provost (Under Suspicion), and executive produced by The Blair Witch Project co-creator Daniel Myrick, the DVD premiere includes a "making of" featurette, audio commentary with the writer-director and storyboards with commentary.

"Looking to escape the pressures of everyday life, a woman (Sorvino) travels to a secluded cabin in the woods. She's not alone, though, because an apparition (West) inhabits the cabin and begins to stalk her. But when the woman's boyfriend (Kirk) arrives, the spirit in the house grows darker and more obsessive. She soon starts to exhibit weird and irrational behavior and her boyfriend fears she's been possessed by the ghost in love with her."

The flick is being billed as a romantic ghost story, but this trailer paints it as something completely different.

EXCLUSIVE Vampires Attack in Behind-the-Scenes Look at 'Stake Land'

Connor Paolo (Gossip Girl, Alexander, Mystic River) stars as Martin, a teenager whose family has been slaughtered. His traveling companion is a taciturn, hardened vampire killer known simply as Mister (Nick Damici, In the Cut, World Trade Center), and together they trudge across the land in search of the rumored safe haven of New Eden."

Sounding along the lines of Vinyan meets any number of nature survival films is Bill Bennett's Uninhabited, a supernatural tale that follows "A young couple go to a remote and deserted coral island for a camping holiday, only to find that the island is inhabited by a ghost seeking retribution for a past outrage."

First announced last April, the pic will arrive on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on August 15. Inside you'll find the official cover art and trailer.

"Harry and Beth want a different kind of holiday. So they charter a boat to drop them off on a remote coral island on the Great Barrier Reef. The island is idyllic – surrounded by a wide reef, covered in palms and full of birds and other wildlife, small and totally deserted. Or is it? The young lovers soon come to believe there is someone else on the island. Things go missing from their camp – and then they discover someone else’s footprints in the sand. What they didn’t realize was that the island has a ghost – a young girl who died in shocking circumstances some eighty years earlier. The ghost at first plays mischievously with the young couple but then turns malevolent. And their idyllic island holiday becomes a nightmare."

Donnie Darko was perhaps the first big cult film of the 21st century and the only good thing director Richard Kelly has ever churned out depending on who you talk to – I really dig the chaotic zaniness of Southland Tales myself. Coming out shortly after the September 11th tragedy (and again in 2004 as a director’s cut), the tale of the mentally unstable teen and a time traveling bunny who saves him from a plane crash flopped at the box-office because it hit too close to home at the time, but went on to entrance audiences on home video. Although complex and having its fair share of plot holes (what time travel film doesn’t, though?), setting the ominous and dreary subject matter in a charming suburbia circa 1988 gave it a nightmarish, Blue Velvet-like feel and let audiences have a glimpse of what really goes on behind white picket fences. Between that and the revolving door of well-casted stars and up-and-comers, it’s easy to see the appeal.

Before Battle: Los Angeles and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Jonathan Leibesman directed the infamous Darkness Falls. Sad as this sounds to me (because it makes me feel old), some of you may be too young to remember the controversy behind this movie that graced the web back in 2003. An original test screening in 2002 was declared a failure when the studio demanded that the audience see more of the creature. Stan Winston was brought in to bring the creature to the forefront. The twist is that the test screening scores were POSITIVE and the movie ended up being a piece of crap (sans the incredible opening sequence, where the witch is kept in the dark).

Anyways, you may as well get that story out of your head because Leibesman tells me on multiple occasions that the original cut is gone and lost. We can add that to the growing list of infamous horror tales that we all pray for on DVD/Blu-ray in the future.

Those of you who actually enjoy the finished product, Image will release on Blu-ray October 18. No specs have been revealed yet, but there's no mention of an alternate cut.

"A vengeful spirit has taken the form of the Tooth Fairy to exact vengeance on the town that lynched her 150 years earlier. Her only opposition is the only child, now grown up, who has survived her before."
