The Centre's denial of permission to Vedanta's mining plan had, in fact, come as a major blow to the BJD government as chief minister Patnaik at a meeting on August 21 announced, "on behalf of the government of Orissa, I give my assurance to extend the necessary support for all its (Vedanta) projects." Patnaik, who inagurated Vedanta's 600 mw power plant at Jharsuguda on August 21, said "I congratulate Vedanta for paving way for making it (power plant) possible and for choosing Orissa as its destination for investment." Tomorrow's BJD rally, branded as "Orissa Bancho Samabesh (Save Orissa Convention), would accuse Centre of trying to stall industrialisation in the name of environment protection, Dasburma, who is also an MLA, said.Tribal-dominated Kalahandi district, in news due to Vedanta's refinery, had rejected the ruling BJD by voting for opposition Congress in last year's general election.Of the five assembly segments in Kalahandi, the ruling BJD could win one seat while four others voted for Congress besides electing Congress candidate B C Das as their MP."People of Kalahandi, particulraly of Lanjigarh assembly segment, have not given you the mandate. They have voted against your party and Vedanta in the last Zilla Parishad election and general election to the state assembly and Lok Sabha," B C Das told the chief minister in a letter.PTI AAM SKN SUS
