Notes

Hole's first studio session took place on Saint Patrick's Day, 1990, a number of days before a significant show at the Jabberjaw in Los Angeles, which was attended by members of the Seattle grunge label, Sub Pop, who then later released "Dicknail" as a single on the label itself less than a year later.

The band were given $500, by Sympathy For The Record Industry's president Long Gone John, to record the session, which was initially meant to include only "Retard Girl." (27)

"Turpentine", which is usually regarded as the first Hole song, was recorded first followed by "Phonebill Song." Courtney Love's own composition and main session result, "Retard Girl" was performed and the final song to be recorded was the noise jam, "Johnnie's In The Bathroom." The no wave-influenced jam was then overdubbed with clips from phone calls Love had recorded, as
well as her reciting the diary of a fictional model.

Love's then-husband, "Falling" James Moreland, recorded and produced the session. Eric Erlandson also took part in the production process. Moreland, despite mixed reports, would not produce Hole's next session at Radio Tokyo.

For years, the correct date of the session was debateable. Some bootlegs, which omitted "Turpentine", included the session in inferior quality and listed incorrect dates. In 2005, it was confirmed by Eric Erlandson to be March 17 stating "it was the day she [Courtney] moved in with me [...] the day we fell in love." (1)
