'Blade Runner': Ridley Scott Directing New Film

Blade Runner

First Posted: 8/18/11 01:22 PM ET Updated: 8/18/11 03:42 PM ET

Now just eight years from the wrecked, futuristic Los Angeles envisioned in the original, Ridley Scott will be helming a new entry into the iconic "Blade Runner" canon.

Deadline reports that the legendary director is set to revive the classic 1982 film, which starred Harrison Ford as Richard Deckard, who worked to capture humanoid robots before falling in love with one of them.

It's unknown, at this point, whether the film will be a prequel, sequel, reboot or spinoff; Scott is currently finishing "Prometheus," the Damon Lindelof-penned film that is a sort of relative to his classic, "Alien."

Also unclear is whether Ford would return to the franchise; he is still an action star, featuring this summer in the disappointing "Cowboys & Aliens," and recently donned his iconic hat and whip for a new entry in the "Indiana Jones" saga. Another film in that series is expected at some point, as well.

Alcon Entertainment, which runs through Warner Bros., acquired the rights to the film in March, announcing its intention to create new entries, in backward and forward-looking directions, to the original.

No film I've ever seen does a better job of combining the sci-fi genre with the film noir. It's an iconic masterpiece that should be left alone, like Casablanca.

They need to remake back to the future 2. Marty travels to 2015. Only in the remake our country is stuck in 2 wars and a deep depression. Oh, & Our government is being over ran by Te@t@rd$.

I hope this movie doesn't get made. Harrison Ford has always been mediocre at best when it comes to acting. I mean you saw how Cowboys and Aliens went. Ridley Scott do not make this movie, it is a waste of time.

So, is an android hunter falling in love with an android a futuristic analogy for homophobia?

Isn't Spielberg planning to remake "Harvey"?

Story line: Deck and Rachel have been married for thirty years. None of their neighbors no that they are a mixed marriage. They have two kids together. Now it is time for their eldest daughter to get married. Rachel hires a wedding consultant and Deck keeps getting these outrageous bills. He is very frustrated but his love for his wife and daughter make him puddy in their hands. The wedding ends up costing $1M+, but what the heck, he is a sap for the girls.

I would really like to see hollywood committing more time and money to projects that are not remakes or based on comic book superheroes.

Seems to me that most remakes are a reflection of writers/directors/producers being unable to come up with any new ideas.

What would be really interesting is to see a reboot of Total Recall 2070 or some other similar sustained exploration of Philip K. Dick's universe. Especially if they could figure out how to not cover the same ground as Babylon 5/Battlestar Galactica/Caprica.

even with Ridley Scott's involvement, I fear what such a film would do to the legacy of the original (though numerously recut/remastered) Blade Runner. It's certainly one of the iconic films of American cinema, and in my opinion, a subpar companion piece (whether sequel or prequel or whatever) would cheapen its legacy, in my view.

I get that Hollywood primarily thinks in dollar signs - and to be fair, unless it were a Michael Bay picture or something to that effect, I'll likely watch the new film. Blade Runner, though, is a great story and piece of cinema on its own. Not sure it needs further expansion.

Who knows? Perhaps the 'new' movie will be closer to the book? If I hear the word 'Kipple', I'll be happy :3
