Donmar West End

What's On

The Donmar West End season was a year-long residency at the Wyndham's Theate in London's West End running from September 2008 to August 2009.

'Two years ago there was a great debate about the future of the straight play in the West End. It coincided with the Donmar’s expansion nationally and internationally and it became clear to us that we could become part of that debate by taking an ambitious season of work into the heart of London’s commercial theatre.

Approaching the work in exactly the same way we do at our Covent Garden home - focussing on excellent production standards; casting at the highest level; an affordable pricing structure; and a full intergenerational

education programme - we planned a season of four plays to run over a year at Wyndham’s Theatre. The season reflected our own repertoire - a little known Chekhov in a new translation by Tom Stoppard (IVANOV), an unknown play by the Japanese writer Yukio Mishima (MADAME DE SADE) and two classical plays cast to the hilt (TWELFTH NIGHT and HAMLET).

I feel confident we have made an impact in the way straight plays are produced in the West End. We have certainly engaged with many new theatregoers and continue to do so as we move HAMLET to New York for the final part of this incredible journey.'
