  1. August 2011 Web Server Survey

In the August 2011 survey we received responses from 463,000,317 sites.

This month there has been a large increase in the number of sites found by the survey, which is now approaching half a billion hostnames. There were particularly large increases in the numbers of sites hosted by Softlayer, AmeriNOC, China Telecom, and the social networking communities Tumblr, Skyrock and Hyves.

Amazon also showed substantial growth and now hosts several million sites at its EC2 facility. EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) is Amazon's cloud computing platform, allowing website owners to quickly rescale resources to meet demand. It has expanded significantly with a new data center recently opened in Tokyo, and is expected to have a revenue of $750M (Source: UBS via Business Week) this year.

However, even with the large increase in sites, the market share of the different server software has changed only a little. Of the leading web servers, just nginx gained share this month, whilst Apache, Microsoft and Google each showed small losses.

  2. July 2011 Web Server Survey

In the July 2011 survey we received responses from 357,292,065 sites.

Apache gained a further 10.8 million sites this month, taking its total up to 235 million and increasing its leading market share by nearly a whole percentage point to 65.9%. OVH, who saw massive growth of 8.7M hostnames last month, gained a much smaller but still significant 1.5M this month. The largest growth was exhibited by Softlayer, gaining 3.5M.

Microsoft IIS is now used by more than 60 million websites, a growth of 1.9M hostnames, capturing 16.8% of the market. Though most of these sites are served directly from Windows computers, fronting Windows machines with an F5 BIG-IP load balancing device remains a popular option and is used on around 8% of Microsoft IIS sites. Microsoft themselves serve nearly half a million hostnames on IIS through BIG-IP, for example http://windows.microsoft.com. VPLS, Inc., who saw a big drop of 1.5M last month, saw the biggest growth this month, adding 800k hostnames and more than doubling their total.

Despite gaining 689k sites, nginx's share fell slightly this month to 6.54%. Google suffered a slight loss last month, and also experienced the largest loss this month, with its total falling by a further 317k sites.

  3. June 2011 Web Server Survey

In the June 2011 survey we received responses from 346,004,403 sites.

Apache was the only major web server software to gain hostnames this month, with growth of 21M and nearly 2.2 percentage points of market share. The largest growth was seen at OVH, which gained more than 8.6M Apache hostnames. Large growth was also seen at Softlayer (5.6M), AmeriNOC (2.5M) and Hanaro Telecom (1.3M).

Among the other server vendors, Microsoft saw the largest loss with 1.4M fewer hostnames than in May. The majority of this loss was caused by VPLS losing nearly 1.5M hostnames.

nginx lost 1.2M hostnames, spread across a large number of hosting companies. The largest loss was at Ecatel, which saw a drop of nearly 700k hostnames.

Google experienced the smallest loss this month with 262k fewer hostnames than last month.

  4. May 2011 Web Server Survey

In the May 2011 survey we received responses from 324,697,205 sites.

Apache exhibited by far the largest growth this month, gaining 12.5M hostnames and over 1.5 percentage points of market share. SoftLayer saw the largest increase, gaining 3.0M hostnames, while Earthlink took a big drop, losing 1.3M.

Microsoft only gained 0.8M hostnames this month, losing them half a percentage point of market share. Rackspace and GoDaddy both showed notable growth, 260k and 280k respectively, but Intergenia AG suffered a fairly big loss of 1.1M hostnames at server4you.net in the US.

nginx and lighttpd both saw small gains of 381k and 21k respectively, while Google gained a much larger 1.5M hostnames.

The Tōhoku Earthquake has not caused any significant drops in the number of sites seen by the survey, though Japan's growth this month of 231k hostnames was about two thirds of what was seen in March (345k) and April (389k).

In Libya, where most of the country's internet access was cut off in early March, hostnames have dropped by about 95% from 917 to just 42. The recent mass protests and political turmoil experienced by other North African and Middle Eastern countries, such as Tunisia, Egypt and Syria, has not yet resulted in any noticeable changes to the countries' hostname numbers.

  5. April 2011 Web Server Survey

In the April 2011 survey we received responses from 312,693,296 sites, a growth of almost 14.7M hostnames. This is the tenth consecutive month of growth seen by the survey.

As in recent months, Apache contributed most to the increase, gaining 11.4M hostnames. Especially large increases were seen at AmeriNOC, SoftLayer and ServerInt, which saw gains of 3.7M, 2.5M, and 1.2M hostnames respectively. Large increases were also seen at several hosting companies, including Amazon, China Telecom and BurstNET.

Microsoft saw an overall increase of 1.2M hostnames, with the largest growth seen at Go Daddy. Microsoft's largest loss was due to the continuing movement of Windows Live Spaces to WordPress.com.

This month saw nginx gain 651k hostnames overall, despite losses at ServePath, China Telecom and Amazon. The largest increase was seen at Hetzner Online AG which saw an additional 349k sites.

The Tōhoku Earthquake did not cause a drop in the number of sites seen by the Web Server Survey this month, as the data collection completed before the earthquake struck.

  6. March 2011 Web Server Survey

In the March 2011 survey we received responses from 298,002,705 sites, a growth of just over 13M hostnames on last month's survey; a continuation of the steady growth which has been seen since July last year.

Apache was the biggest contributor to this month's growth, with an increase of 8.5M hostnames. This increase comes despite large losses of 2.23M at skyrock.net due to their servers no longer reporting a server banner. Most of the increase is once again due to AmeriNOC and Softlayer, with gains of 5.5M and 1.2M hostnames respectively. Large increases were also seen at both Leaseweb and Hetzner Online AG.

nginx gained 1.2M hostnames this month due to increases at a number of hosting companies, the largest of which was 289k at Hetzner Online AG.

Small gains were seen by both Microsoft and Google, with increases of 560k and 205k hostnames respectively. Microsoft's increase came primarily from Go Daddy, and an increase of 296k hostnames hosted by Microsoft which made up for a drop seen there last month. Despite the gain in hostnames, Microsoft experienced a 0.7 percentage point loss in market share, while Google's share was relatively unchanged.

The only web server vendor to see a loss in the number of hostnames this month was lighttpd. It experienced a drop of 157k hostnames which was shared by multiple hosting companies.
