Commander Joins ‘Ifthar’ Celebrations

 

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya joined Muslim members of the Sri Lanka Army to celebrate ‘Ifthar’, breaking of Ramadan fast last evening (23) at a fast-breaking event, organized at Wadduwa Holiday Resort, Wadduwa. The event was organized by the Muslims Association of the Sri Lanka Army under the patronage of its President Brigadier M. Z. R. Sallay. ‘Ifthar’ celebrations marked for the first time in the Army took place in accordance with the wishes of the Commander who wants all religious and cultural identities be accommodated equally in the organization.

The government yesterday stressed that it will deal firmly with terrorist elements who were responsible for recent incidents in several parts of the country. According to Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the maximum punishment will be meted out to the criminals who were involved in the murder of a policeman in Puttalam. He said that the government is bound to ensure the security for each and every person in the country and criminals who are involved in certain incidents in several parts of the country would be brought to book soon.

* Workshop on Bee-Keeping Educates Resettled People

A two-day workshop on bee-keeping for resettled people in Kilinochchi took place during August 21 - 22 at Malayalapuram pre-school premises as a measure, meant to find employment. During the sessions, 55 bee boxes were given away to 55 families in the area by the Officer Commanding, 25 Gajaba Regiment. The workshop educated the public on this money spinning domestic industry. Troops also assured support to the public for sale of their products after proper bee-keeping practice gets underway.

Major General Chandana Rajaguru, assumed duties as new Commissioner General of Rehabilitation on Monday (15) after his nomination was approved by His Excellency, the President Mahinda Rajapaksa.  He will serve this office whilst holding his substantial appointment as the Director General, Infantry at the Army Headquarters. The donation coordinated by the Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) was comprised of 1500 books including encyclopaedias, novels, famous story books for children and a rare collection of books for academic purposes.

The newly-constructed administrative building complex of the 68 Division Headquarters at Puthukudiyiruppu was opened recently, amidst religious rites and rituals during a simple ceremony. The new building, constructed by the Army enables the Division to smoothly conduct its administrative roles, moving out from temporary structures that were established soon after the Wanni Humanitarian Operations were over.

Since May 2009, the government has spent more than Rs. 2.5 billion for the rehabilitation of former LTTE cadres, the Rehabilitation Commissioner, Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe said. “More than 8,000 former rehabilitated LTTE members have been reintegrated into society during the period and plans are afoot to reintegrate another 150 rehabilitated former LTTE cadres into society, next Friday,” he added.
