Mayor Newsom Endorses BART Director Lynette Sweet for D10 Supervisor

San Francisco, April 21, 2010 — San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has just thrown his support behind BART Director Lynette Sweet who is running for District 10 Supervisor.

“I am so thankful for the endorsement of Mayor Newsom and so many respected public servants,” Sweet said. “Their endorsements are strong encouragement for my work in public service.”

Newsom’s support of Sweet is expected to carry considerable weight in District 10, given his strong stewardship there. Newsom recently attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Huntersview HOPE SF housing development, a project he had committed to when first taking office. Just this week the Mayor announced an initiative to support local businesses through the Office of Economic and Workforce Development with considerable funds slated for projects in Visitacion Valley and Portola.

As an elected member of the BART board of Directors, Sweet is the only elected official in the District 10 race. In a very wide field of candidates, Sweet has distinguished herself with the most endorsements by elected representatives and community leaders, primarily because of her many years of public service.

Sweet has also received a considerable amount of support for her candidacy, given her long history of service to the District and clear understanding of the challenges facing District 10 and the residents’ needs. As Supervisor, Sweet plans to address a number of key concerns facing District 10, including job creation, public safety and improving resources for the next generation.

Sweet was appointed to the San Francisco Redevelopment Commission in 1996 and was elected its chairperson in 1998. In 2000 she was appointed to the San Francisco Taxi Commission and then elected to the Commission’s presidency in 2001.

Sweet was elected as BART Director in November 2004 after initially being appointed in 2003. As Director, Lynette has represented the only BART District to span the Bay with constituents in all three of the BART District's counties, which includes San Francisco. Sweet currently serves on the YMCA Board of Directors and on the Board of Directors of The Providence Foundation
