HOF names deserving, but where are Bure, Burns?

I am not here to besmirch any of the players honored with nominations into the Hockey Hall of Fame. They all earned their places and are deserving. Ed Belfour, Mark Howe, Joe Nieuwendyk and Doug Gilmour constitute a fine class.

So perhaps I'm objecting to the rules of the Hockey Hall of Fame here. Why cap each class at just four players, two builders and two females? It should be based on if the player belongs in the Hall, not if he's one of the four most deserving of being in the Hall.

I'm having a hard time accepting Pavel Bure not having his name called. I understand fully that he didn't have a long career, but the career that he did have was jaw-dropping. He was as dynamic and electric a scorer as the NHL had. Five times Bure scored more than 50 goals in a season; two of those occasions he hit the 60-goal threshold.

In 11 seasons spent with the Canucks, Panthers and Rangers, Bure ended with 437 goals and 342 assists. A six-time All-Star, Bure won the Calder Trophy once and the Maurice Richard twice (would have been three if the award were given in 1993-94).

Valeri Bure, brother of Pavel, clearly doesn't agree with the lack of inclusion, either, tweeting this afternoon the following: "Congrats to the guys that got into Hockey Hall of Fame today. But I think it's a big joke that my brother did not make it again"

From a personality standpoint, Bure might not have been the easiest guy in the NHL to get along with. He had his shortcomings and rough edges. But we're talking hockey skill here, and there haven't been many as good as Bure. He is third all time in goals-per-game average, proof of his ability as a scoring machine.

And if Bure couldn't get in with this year's class, I wouldn't hold my breath for next year, either. Joe Sakic, Mats Sundin, Brendan Shanahan, Jeremy Roenick, Curtis Joseph among others.

I haven't even touched on the builders category, where nobody was elected this year -- the first class with no builder since 1981. Pat Burns is especially mystifying. Most everybody felt he was snubbed last year. The coach whose career was cut short due to illness died last November.

Not that that should have factored in the decision this year, and not that it needed to. Burns’ merits were enough, winning the Jack Adams Trophy as the league's best coach three times (each coming in his first year with the Habs, Leafs and B's) with three different teams and then winning a Stanley Cup with a fourth team (the Devils in 2002-03).

Nieuwendyk thinks Burns isn't exactly getting his due. "For me, he's a Hall of Famer in my mind," he said.

Again, this is in no way meant to diminish this year's inductees. I'm just struck by the guys still waiting at the altar.

Agreed! Clark Gilles' 600 points in 900 games is the point their credibility went out the window. Sergei Makarov, Pavel Bure & Alexaneder Mogilny deserve to be in!

MGD, is it really necessary to call someone a "scumbag" and make statements like "jus
t crawl back in the hole you came from" based on a disagreement over who should get into the hockey HOF??? Undecided

Bure was the Ovechkin of his time, the most feared player in the NHL, an obvious first ballot hall of famer. The hockey hall of fame has lost it's credibility and i now consider it a joke.

someone compared dailgle to lindros as overhyped ?? lindros won a hart trophy and a silver and gold medal in the olympics and the Hockey HOF does consider your Olympic career here. plus a sc finals appearance and all-star games. what did daigle ever do ? since neely got in, lindros with similar stats and a hart trophy will get in one day.

Agreed! One of the true Brainiacs of the game. A chess player approach of seeing play combos & possibilities. I feel like shooting myself in the foot not writing a letter asking for his signed pic (Mogilny, Kariya, Selanne, Nieuwendyk & Berard gave me something!) Proved critics "Hull & Oates" doesn't make him a solo art. If it was up to me. He, Housley, Gilmour, Vernon, Mogilny, Howe, Bure & Nieuwendyk would be First Ballot Selections!!!!

I couldn't be happier for quiet, unassuming, steady & productive Mark Howe. How I miss the Gene Hart & "The Chief" Bobby Taylor's broadcasts of the Flyers! Soooo steady. No taking nights off for this true pro. Never going thru the motions ala Mike Richards! A great example of great hockey genes. And to think of the scary back issues he faced near the end. Congradulations Mark Howe! I'm just glad you're alive to witness & enjoy it. Unlike Pat Burns.

Joe, Nieuwendyk is another example! 2 Stanley Cups, 50 goal seasons & rookie, Calder & Conn Smythe-not to mention one of the cleanest, classiest, most hardworking players ever. Someone who actually looked like he appreciates the honor & gift of playing a kid's game for millions.

(I wonder when Mike Vernon's 2 Stanley Cups, Conn Smythe, All-Star Selections & insane win total will finally get him in....(not to mention Media-Hater High School-To-Hockey Star Tom Barrasso!)

All-time leading forwards for NHL assists: Gretzky, Francis, Messier, then Adam Oates. With over 1400 pts, Oates belongs in the Hall. He scored more points than everyone in this Hall class or the clss of 2010. The voters blew it.

How about Phil Housley who's point totals are sick. How does way under a point per game player like Clark Gillies ever got in I'll never know. But Pavel Bure is just dynamite before those killer knee injures. Despite returning courageously to win Rockey Richard Trophies & numerious All-Star appearance like the time Valerie & Pavel both made it & dominated in Toronto, the Pavel who appeared to be an ice hockey version of The Harlem Globetrotters who literally skated circles around the competition was gone. The Injury Bug shredded a career that could've been better.

However, my favorate HOF canadiate was Alexander Mogilny. Only the accursed hip problems could prevent the original Alexander The Great from being the first Russian to score 500 goals & 1,000 points. Now that my friends (along with the other "Twin Russian Rocket") is one who definately is one of the All-Time Legends...Russian or anywise!!!!

Since there's been some typical dumbassed Philly fan comments in this board, let me say I'm from Philadelphia and have been a Flyers fan for 30+ years.  One of the most memorable performances I have seen was on January 26th, 1999, when the Panthers tied the Flyers 3-3.  Actually, it was Pavel Bure who tied the Flyers with a wonderful hat trick.  What a player he was!  Anyone who saw him play could expect magic.  A career sadly cut short.  He'll make to the HoF eventually, hopefully sooner than later.  And I'll be mighty happy when he does.
