How to Have Safe Pregnancy Sex

Sure, sex before pregnancy used to be a wild affair because all you could damage was the nightstand lamp during the most raging romp. However, pregnancy introduces other considerations. Once you have taken the required precautions, pregnancy sex can be equally enjoyable.

Questions that bother lovemaking couples during pregnancy are:

Is it safe to have sex during pregnancy?
According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, unless your spouse’s doctor tells you otherwise, sexual intercourse is safe throughout the pregnancy. Click “Pregnancy Basics – Is it Safe to have Sex?” to learn more.

Can vigorous copulation damage the baby?
The amniotic fluid in the uterus and the mucous membrane in the cervix protect the baby. Therefore, even a larger penis cannot hurt the baby. However, if you put your weight on the mother’s stomach, in a missionary position, you can cause her discomfort.

How often can we have sex without danger?
You can have sex as often as you want. Of course, the mother may not welcome sexual intercourse during the first trimester due to morning sickness and other unwelcome pregnancy symptoms. However, you could have enjoyable sex after the fourth month to even the more advanced stages of pregnancy.

Many couples are unsure about how safe it is to continue having sex during the months of pregnancy. Here are some FAQs on sex during pregnancy:

Can sex during pregnancy harm the baby?
Generally, it is safe to have sex during all stages of pregnancy. The baby is well protected in the amniotic sac inside the womb. However, in certain cases where a doctor has specifically advised against it, sexual intercourse during pregnancy can be dangerous.

When is it unsafe to have sex during pregnancy?
Having sex during pregnancy should be avoided if your doctor has advised you against it. This is usually so in a high-risk pregnancy. Your doctor might advise against sexual intercourse if:

• Your spouse has a history or threat of premature labor.
• Your spouse has suffered a miscarriage earlier.
• Your spouse experiences bleeding or discharge from the vagina.
• Your spouse experiences leakage of amniotic fluid.
• Your souse has a low-lying placenta.
• Your spouse’s cervix is weak and has a tendency to dilate prematurely.
• You or your spouse suffers from a sexually transmitted disease.
• Your spouse is carrying twins or triplets.

Is it true that having an orgasm can cause contractions or miscarriage?
No. The contractions experienced by a woman during intercourse are different from the contractions that bring on labor. There is no way orgasm can bring on labor or cause miscarriage.

What are the signs to watch out for while having sex during pregnancy?
Consult the doctor immediately should your spouse experiences any abnormal pain, discharge, or bleeding from the vagina.

If you are about to start a family with your spouse, you will often hear about “family planning”. But what really does it mean? Family planning is often understood as prevention of pregnancy. However, it is more than just that.

Hemorrhoids in Pregnancy are Embarrassing and Painful. Tips to Relieve Hemorrhoids During Pregnancy

Hemorrhoids in pregnancy can turn an otherwise healthy pregnancy into a nightmare. Read on to see why pregnant women get hemorrhoids and what you can do to prevent or relieve hemorrhoids during pregnancy.

As a certified nurse midwife I have treated many cases of pregnancy and hemorrhoids. It was not until I personally experienced hemorrhoids during pregnancy that I understood how painful these little monsters can be.

What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are swollen varicose veins on or around the anus. The veins within the anal canal become swollen because of weakened vein walls allowing blood to pool. This causes the walls of the vein to expand creating the visible ball on the outside of the anus called a hemorrhoid.

What causes pregnancy hemorrhoids?

Pregnancy requires a woman to increase her total blood volume by 40% to accommodate her growing baby nutrition and circulatory needs. This increase in blood volume requires that the pregnant woman’s blood vessels relax and expand to hold the extra blood. This is one of the major reasons why pregnant women are prone to blood clots, varicose veins and hemorrhoids.

Pregnant women are also prone to constipation due to extra fluid absorption and relaxation of the bowels.

Constipation combined with the increased pressure on the rectum and perineum due to the growing baby is another reason for hemorrhoids during pregnancy.

Types of pregnancy hemorrhoids:

Internal hemorrhoids during pregnancy:

You can’t see or feel these hemorrhoids, but straining or irritation from a passing stool can injure a hemorrhoid’s delicate surface and cause it to bleed. You may notice small amounts of bright red blood on your toilet tissue or in the toilet bowl water. Because internal anal membranes lack pain-sensitive nerve fibers, these hemorrhoids usually don’t cause discomfort. Occasionally, straining can push an internal hemorrhoid through the anal opening. If a hemorrhoid remains displaced (prolapsed), it can cause pain and irritation.

External hemorrhoids during pregnancy:

These hemorrhoids tend to be painful. Sometimes blood may pool in an external hemorrhoid and form a clot (thrombus) causing severe pain, swelling and inflammation. When irritated, external hemorrhoids can itch or bleed. The pain of hemorrhoids may be comparable to being stabbed in the rectum by a knife or hot poker.

What can you do to treat hemorrhoids during pregnancy?

The good news is that hemorrhoids usually improve after the baby is born. In the meantime, there are a number of things you can do to treat hemorrhoids. Any one or more of the following may help relieve hemorrhoids during pregnancy:

Take a warm bath with baking soda or place baking soda (wet or dry) on the area to reduce itching.

Use witch hazel to reduce swelling or bleeding.

Use Tucks Medicated Pads.

Avoid sitting or standing for long periods.

Drink plenty of fluids.

Drink prune juice.

Do not delay going to the bathroom.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

If you are suffering very badly from pregnancy hemorrhoids please consult with your obstetric provider for hemorrhoid medication.

Symptoms That Arise During Pregnancy

A missed period is the most obvious pregnancy symptoms. A missed period indicates that one is on its second to third week of its pregnancy. Some women might experience abnormal period which is short period or a period which is lighter than normal.

One of the early pregnancy symptoms are fainting or the feeling of dizziness. Women at this time might feel light headed after walking few distance or while climbing stairs. This happens because the uterus walls swells compressing arteries of the legs which ultimately cause the blood sugar level to drop.

Extreme fatigue, nausea, mood swing and flu like symptoms are also sign of pregnancy.  Early in their pregnancy women feel extremely exhausted which can be followed by the feeling of vomiting or queasiness known as morning sickness but many women might experience it in evening or night. Frequent urination which is due to the Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Hormone is produced by the developing embryo is also a sign of pregnancy. Mood swings are quite severe during pregnancy and is similar to what a women experiences as pre menstrual syndrome.

Pregnancy symptoms include altered sense of taste.  An equally common symptom is loathing towards a particular food. One might even develop a strong dislike against a past food craving. These are not sure sign of pregnancy and one must not rely on them totally. This happens mostly due to the estrogen hormone present in women’s body.

Several hormonal changes in the body can bring about digestive problem during pregnancy. The hormone produced in the body at this time slows down bowel movement to absorb as much as essential nutrient in the body. It is advised by the doctors to take smaller but frequent meals. Slower emptying of stomach may also cause acidity leading to heartburn.

Early pregnancy symptoms show breast tenderness and swollenness. Since women breast plays an important role after childbirth, the body prepares itself for breastfeeding. Nipples might be much more sensitive and the skin around the nipple known as areola darkens.

Some other physical changes are back pain, cramps and high body temperature. Lower back pain can be due to several reasons .Firstly it can be because of the weights gain during pregnancy. Secondly it can be lack of proper sleep during night since the womb keeps pulling on the muscle making one feel uncomfortable while sleeping. It is best advised to use maternity pillow during pregnancy.

A less known fact for many is implantation bleeding .Implantation bleeding is caused by fertilized egg when it tries to implant itself in uterus.

Gaining weight is one of the unavoidable pregnancy symptoms. To make sure one is pregnant its best to take a pregnancy test. Pregnancy test gives better result after at least two days of missed periods and its advised to take minimum two pregnancy tests.

Ovulation Testing

One of the most important things a woman needs to know if she wants to conceive is when is she ovulating.

Ovulation is the time in a woman’s monthly cycle when her ovary will release an egg. If she has intercourse in the days leading up to and on the day of ovulation, this is her ‘pregnancy window’ and she has a good chance of falling pregnant.

Generally, ovulation occurs between day 8 and day 14 of the monthly cycle, but this can vary. For women with irregular periods however, predicting the time of ovulation is a lot more difficult.

Women who are having trouble falling pregnant or women with irregular periods have long sought the perfect ovulation test or ovulation predictor. If only there was an ovulation test kit that was as simple to use and as accurate as a home pregnancy test.

So how does a woman know when she is about to ovulate?

According to fertility specialists there are three key changes in a woman’s body in the lead up to and at the time of ovulation – a rise in basal body temperature, changes to the cervical mucus and a surge of luteinizing hormone (LH).

Basal body temperature is the temperature of the body as rest. This increases at the time of ovulation, and remains higher until the beginning of a women’s next menstrual cycle. By taking her temperature with a basal thermometer every day for a number of months, a woman can gain a better understanding of her monthly cycle and the day she is most likely to ovulate. For most women, 35.5- 36.5 degrees C is considered normal prior to ovulation and 36.5 – 38 degrees C to 99 degrees after ovulation.

However once the rise in Basal body temperature is detected ovulation has already occurred. An egg can only live in the body for approximately 24 hours after ovulation , so by the time the temperature rise is recorded, it is generally too late for intercourse to result in a pregnancy. So while it may be useful for women with regular cycles to identify ovulation – the best times of the month for them to conceive, it is of limited use for women with irregular cycles and does not work as an ovulation predictor.

It is also not fool proof as many factors other than impending ovulation can impact on basal body temperature such as stress, insomnia, alcohol, smoking, dreams, even using an electric blanket. Just shaking the basal thermometer in the morning can raise temperatures, so the process does have its limitations. Tracking changes to cervical mucus has helped some women identify their most fertile time and can help predict ovulation before it happens.
As ovulation approaches, cervical mucus changes. It becomes clearer, wetter and more elastic with a consistency that can be compared to raw egg white. When these changes occur, a woman is at her most fertile and has a good chance of falling pregnant.
Tracking changes to cervical mucus as a means of predicting ovulation will not work for everyone. Some women, especially those with PCOS, have several patches of fertile-looking cervical mucus throughout their cycle. Certain drugs, such as antihistamines and Clomid, dry up cervical mucus.
The best predictor of ovulation is monitoring levels of Luteinizing hormone (LH) in urine. LH is the hormone that actually triggers ovulation.
Ovulation tests which measure LH can be useful predictors of ovulation. However, in order to detect the LH surge with accuracy, directions must be followed exactly. Ovulation tests work in a different way to home pregnancy tests, and require some skill in interpreting results.
Generally, ovulation will take place 12-48 hours after the LH surge is first detected, though 36 hours is considered to be the average length of time for ovulation following the LH surge.? To increase the chance of conception, a woman should have intercourse on the day of the LH surge and for the following three days after.
Ovulation tests are designed to help facilitate pregnancy, and should certainly never by relied upon as a means of contraception.

Certain drugs, such as clomid, can give false positives if a woman tests for ovulation too early in her cycle.

Ovulation test kits can help you to identify your fertility window. However if your ovulation cycle does not appear to be regular, you may wish to seek further support and advice with an IVF doctor at one of our IVFAustralia clinics. Please contact us by visiting

What Affect Does Ovulation Changing From Month To Month Have On Ba Sex Or Gender

Article by Sandy Dean

I often hear from women who are trying to gauge their ovulation day in an attempt to get pregnant. A question that I am commonly asked is some variation on “is it possible for your ovulation day to change from month to month? If so, what does this mean if you’re trying to become pregnant? And, what, if any, implications does this have if you are trying to choose your baby’s gender or sex? I will address these questions in the following article.

Your Ovulation Day Can Most Definitely Change From Month To Month For Many Reasons: The short answer is yes, your ovulation day can change dramatically from month one month to the next or it can remain relatively constant or stable. It really does depend upon the woman in question and also upon what is going on with that same woman’s life, health, and fertility cycle. Illness, stress, or having an anovulatory cycle (which means that no ovulation occurs during a particular period of time) can all be responsible for variations in your ovulation day.

It’s a myth that most women ovulate around day 14 or mid way through a 28 day cycle (although some women do.) Some women have shorter cycles and some women have longer cycles. Some women ovulate earlier or later in their cycle. And some women experience very sporadic ovulation. All of these things can make it inadvisable to just assume that you ovulate on the same day each and every month.

You can easily test yourself using an ovulation predictor or testing. I like the saliva kind, but the urine type is readily available also. When I was trying to become pregnant and was charting my ovulation, I was very surprised to discover that on most months, I ovulated very late in my cycle. While I had assumed that I must be ovulating around day 14 because of my 28 day cycle, this was not at all the case. Most of the time, I ovulated sometime around day 20. There were times that I ovulated as late as day 23 or as early as day 18. Luckily, my sporadic and late ovulation did not impede my ability to become pregnant (that’s a myth also.) But it did make planning a bit more challenging.

Many women will try to gauge ovulation around when their menstrual period occurs. However, in some cases, it is possible to become pregnant without regular (or easily identifiable) menstrual periods. Another misconception is that some women ovulate more than once in any given month or ovulation period. While it is possible to release more than one egg in a month (which is what happens with twins,) those same eggs would be released at roughly the same time – making only one instance of ovulation possible. You can’t ovulate or become pregnant twice during the same ovulation period.

What Happens When Your Ovulation Day Changes From Month To Month While You’re Trying To Gage Ovulation In Order To Choose Your Baby’s Gender?: Well, a changing ovulation day from one month to the next does mean that you have to be more observant and you will need to test yourself more regularly. However, if you are trying to choose your baby’s gender, you will need to do this anyway. When you have intercourse is very important because you want to have sex very close to your ovulation day. For a boy baby, you want to have sex after that ovulation day. But for a girl baby, you want to have sex before that ovulation day.

But, when that day becomes a moving target, this becomes more challenging. While it’s true that a woman who always ovulates on the same day each and every month is going to have an easier time planning her conception day, a woman who does not have this luxury isn’t out of luck. If this is the case for you, then you’ll just need to get in the habit of monitoring or checking your ovulation every day with a kit. There are very good saliva kits that will show you that ovulation is approaching. This is important if you are trying for a girl baby.

The point is even if the date or day of your ovulation changes from month to month, as long as it is occurring and you are able to tell when or if it has happened, it is very possible for you to not only become pregnant, but to increase your chances for getting the gender that you want as well.

I’ve put together a few websites that take a lot of the guess work out of choosing your baby’s gender when getting pregnant. You’ll find step by step instructions, resources for douche recipes and food pH lists, information on when to conceive, tips, support, and examples of ovulation predictors / pH testing strips.
