Police held a news conference this afternoon regarding the abduction of 29-day Bryan Dos Santos-Gomes. More light was shed during that news conference regarding what transpired just prior to the kidnapping.

Apparently the victims were waiting at a bus stop and the suspect approached them asking for directions. The women gave the directions and then boarded the bus. When the two women exited the bus at Cleveland and Linhart the SUV came back again and the suspect asked for better directions. It is at this point police believe the suspect offered the women money to get into the car and guide her to the destination for which she was asking directions.

Police believe that this was a planned abduction by a very “cunning” individual. One of the reasons why they believe this is that the woman had a child’s infant seat, diaper bag and no child. Police believe she was prepared to abduct the first baby she saw the opportunity to abduct.

Police are hoping that someone will recognize that they have an acquaintance who has a new baby.

At this point there are several leads being followed by law enforcement. Also, two women who speak Portuguese are going to be handing out fliers through the help of their church in the Tampa and Miami areas.

Police explained during the news conference that the mother did not fight off the abductor because she was just “scared to death”.

Police stated that they are still working on a composite of the abductor.

A Florida Amber Alert was issued late Friday for an infant kidnapped from his mother at knife point by an unknown woman.

This story surrounding how this kidnapping occurred was a bit hard for me to understand at first.

Apparently the infant’s mother, Maria Fatima Ramos Dos Santos, was carrying the child and walking with a friend and her child down the street in the vicinity of U.S. 41 and Linhart Avenue. The group was approached by a woman driving a SUV. She asked them for directions to a neighborhood called Pine Manor. For some unknown reason the women decided to get into the SUV with the woman, who was a stranger to both of them, and show her the way. The woman apparently told the two that she would drive them back to the location after being shown the way to Pine Manor.

After arriving at the Pine Manor location the woman drove the group back to the original location and then pulled a knife and told the women to exit the vehicle. Dos Santos’ friend was able to exit the vehicle with her child but Dos Santos, according to the friend, suffered a panic attack and was unable to exit the vehicle before it sped away.

The friend called police and told them of the kidnapping. Dos Santos was later dropped off in the city at another location where she was able to get help from a passerby who called police.

Police believe based on the information they have so far that this abduction was premeditated because the vehicle contained an empty infant seat and diapers.

It was difficult for police to obtain information in a timely manner from the victims because they only speak their native language of Portuguese. Police had to wait for a translator so they could obtain the details of the kidnapping and description of the baby and the suspect information.

The parents are not considered suspects and they are grieving over the disappearance of their only child.

Apparently after interviewing the mother of the kidnapped infant police were able to ascertain that the abductor used the victim’s cell phone to make a bogus call to her own mother. The bogus call was recording on the answering machine of a local business so police believe they at least have the abductor’s voice on tape. A news conference is planned for this afternoon and the audio of that phone call is expected to be released to the public during that news conference.
