Hello Brian,  I'm not sure whether when given the original story it
can influence the
RV, but I thought I might give you some 'factual' information on
Joana -
unfortunatley the media contingent following Madeleine McCann have
somehow twisted the facts
of this case to suit themselves.

In fact the brutality accusation only came about after the McCann case
became a huge media
event.

In fact, I believe that if it were not for the international media
looking for proof of
police incompetence, I don't believe that this accusation would have
progressed to where
it is today. Lenor could not identify ONE of the five PJ, and in actual
fact even without
any evidence the Prosecution Office decided to take this directly to
court (without a formal
investigation) for judicial transparency.

What has been reported are not facts, they are some accusations that
were leveled at the PJ
and the media has jumped on without telling all of the story. What most
British journalists
forget to mention ? never allow truth or reality to kill a good story,
of course ?- was a
couple of "small" details that, if mentioned, would transform
those good headlines
in nothing. So, let?s take a look at some facts about that "another
missing girl":

*Her mother, Leonor Cipriano, only reported to Police her daughter has
disappeared two days
after;

*The body of Joana Cipriano was never found, but samples of her blood
were found in her
mother refrigerator;

*Her mother justified those samples of blood admitting she had beaten
Joana, for some
reason, she was hurt and she blooded from her nose;
*Leonor Cipriano and her brother, who had a incestuous relationship,
were sentenced to 16
years in jail, for the murder of her daughter and nice;

*The Public Prosecutor?s Office opened a criminal investigation and
ordered a police
line-up, with the CID officers named and accused by Leonor Cipriano of
beating her; The
line-up took place with Leonor Cipriano behind a two-way mirror and she
couldn?t recognize
any of the aggressors;  The Public Prosecutor?s Office magistrate that
was in charge of the
criminal investigation decided to accuse the five CID officers, but
didn?t mentioned, in the
accusation sent to the Court, that Leonor Cipriano couldn?t identify any
of the aggressors,
in the police line-up; 

*Leonor Cipriano NEVER CONFESSED the murder of her own daughter.

*Police is convinced (and the jurors at the trial found enough evidence
to pass a verdict of
guilty) that Leonor Cipriano and her brother were found, by Joana,
having sexual relations,
when she came home, back from the groceries shop. As Leonor Cipriano had
a lover, at the
time, they were afraid she would tell him what she saw;  So, they beat
her, in order to
frighten her and keep her mouth shut up;
Perhaps accidentally, they beat her so violently that they killed her.
So, they decided to
get rid of he body and cut it in pieces, keeping some of them in the
freezer, while they
gave the other pieces to be eaten by pigs (this is what police believes
is the strongest
possibility, because there was no other trace of Joana Cipriano, unless
the blood samples in
her mother freezer?)

*The body of Joana Cipriano was never found.

And so, here we have a terrible story of a dysfunctional family, a child
murdered and a very
difficult police investigation. The only thing ? in my humble opinion -
that has some
similarity with Madeleine McCann disappearance is the fact that the
person in charge of
Madeleine?s case is the same that successfully headed Joana Cipriano
investigation: CID
Chief-Inspector Gon?do Amaral.

Success, in Joana?s case, is clear: the murderers were found, accused,
went to court, they
were sentenced, they appealed the sentence and the Portuguese Supreme
Court reduced it to 16
years of jail to both of them ? the mother, Leonor Cipriano and her
brother, for the murder
her daughter and nice, eight year old Joana Cipriano.

The court heard a catalogue of horrifying details, including an earlier
video taped
confession from Joana?s uncle in which he related the circumstances of
his niece?s murder.
This video testimony is now the subject of an appeal from the defence
team who claim it
should be excluded because the couple exercised their right to remain
silent during the
trial. In the TAPED confession, Jo㯠Cipriano said he and his
sister hit Joana who then
banged her head against a wall before collapsing, unconscious, onto the
floor. Jo㯠Cipriano
claimed that he had wanted to call an ambulance but that his sister
prevented him, telling
him instead to go to Joana?s stepfather and inform him that she had
disappeared.

In Portugal all PJ interviews are recorded by video, infact at no time
did the defendants
argue that the cofessions that they were watching were beaten out of
them - quite the
opposite, just a techical legality of the right of the court to see
these confession.

The trial included key testimony from Joana?s stepfather,
Ant󮩯 Leandro, who related that
Leonor had confided to him that she had had a sexual relationship with
her brother. He also
told the court that during this conversation, which took place a few
days after Joana?s
disappearance, Leonor had admitted that she and her brother had killed
the little girl.

A key element of the prosecution?s case rests on the fact that the
couple dismembered the
girl?s corpse. Ant󮩯 Leandro, confronted with photographs of
tools allegedly used by the
couple, said he recognised a saw he had kept at home. In the video taped
confession, Jo㯊Cipriano admitted that the body of the girl
was dismembered and placed in a refrigerated
trunk. A forensic specialist involved in the case, Albino Santana dos
Santos, conceded that
body parts, matching the size of a girl of Joana?s height, could have
been stuffed inside
the trunk and that of the dna.

Sometime during the two days BEFORE POLICE WERE CALLED to the house she
washed her house
down with diesel petrol.  This petrol matched the tank that was kept on
the property for
farm machinery.  Blood residue was found in several places, including a
large stain in the
kitchen bench and floor, however the petrol has effectivly compromised
the identifcation
process. In fact, the mother acknowleged the blood in the freezer and
claimed it came from a
nose bleed after she had given Joana a beating.

For some reason, the internation media has painted Lenor Cipriano as a
grieved mother of a
missing child. This portrait seems to be much more inline with the
media's agenda at
that time. What is not mentioned is that Lenor is despised in her
homeland, during the trial
prosecution also presented evidence that the couple had been repeatedly
mistreated Joana,
recounting that she was little more than a ?servant? in her own
household. They produced
four witnesses who testified to her mistreatment.

Sorry that this post is so long, it is just I truly believe that the
verdict was a safe one
and that media have twisted the facts to suit their story. Most people
will assume then that
I think the PJ were correct in the handling of Madeleine McCann - I DO
NOT. I think that in
McCanns case, the investigation has been bumbled, to the point of almost
out and outright
planting/involvment. Just in this particular case I think that the media
has it wrong. The
very fact that during the appeals process the only reason that was put
forward, was the
inadmissability of VIDEO confession.

Apologise if my translation is not 100%, Thank you for your time Brian,

Hi, thanks for sharing this information with me and will be happy to try again.

I try and not let anything influence my dreams, normal or lucid.  I'm able to clear my my mind via meditation for almost everything I do...including before I fall asleep. If it didn't, then my dreams would most likely all be about what I doing the previous day and thinking about right before I fell asleep.   The picture of the black and blue face does still stick in my head, and could have possibly affected my work thus far on this case...I have intently keep it out of this case for solely that reason...so all I can do is try again for you.  I also appreciate your honestly and differing opinion :)

Regarding the black and blue face - there is no doubt that she had been beaten, although it was not during her TAPED interrogation.  Her cellmate in jail has actually already confessed to this after she was released on drink in public charges.  This was never reported in the international media, only in Portugal. 

Just thought I would clear up something earlier, the scandal had already broken and Carlos Silvino was arrested before Joana went missing on 12 Sept 2004 (not 2003).

Thank you for all your work on this case.  Although I obviously have a different opinion on the case, any way to find her body or otherwise would help to ease the suffering of the rest of her family (father etc)
