About the Awards

GameSpot's Best of 2010 awards cover special achievements in the field of advancements for games, dubious honors for less-than-admirable qualities, and full awards for individual genres and every major platform. Nominations and awards are the result of rigorous debate among GameSpot's editors, who select up to five finalists and one winner for almost every category (the Game of the Year category includes up to 10 finalists). To qualify for an editorial award, games must have been reviewed by GameSpot between January 1, 2010, and November 30, 2010.

Award categories are intended to call out those games that truly deserve the attention--therefore, while each award is meaningful, it's considered an honor simply to be nominated.

Special Achievement

Best Story

Not all games have, or need, a great story. But there are plenty of games in a wide variety of genres that have a plot--and in rare cases, they have truly great stories. The Best Story award highlights the best story in any game released this year.

The only game that I didn't play out of the top five was Enslaved. So I'll talk about the other four.

Alan Wake's story was intelligent, gripping, scary, and at one special point, hysterically funny and undeniably awesome.

Heavy Rain's story was also intelligent, also gripping, also scary, and additionally had twists, a beautifully intricate mystery, replayability, and perfect music.

Mass Effect 2's story was fun, cool, exciting, interesting, and full of hilarious, badass, and extremely good voice acting.

Red Dead Redemption's story was perfect for me. As perfect as could be with the story it was trying to tell. I couldn't find any plot holes, nor could I find any places where the storyline felt weak. Every character was important, every chance encounter felt like a genuine moment of decision. I will remember all these games, but Red Dead Redemption was my favorite.

I end by saying this is all my opinion. Whether you agree is immaterial, what matters is that all four of these games were winners in their own right, and deserve to be bought, played, and enjoyed.

I hope to get the same experience from Enslaved.

ME2 was the best story for the PC, since RDR didnt make it to the PC, it's abit hard to judge for yourself

Way to go Gamespot; most of your fanboyish idiots of readers were able to make a better choice than you did. Although ME2 is a bit overly superficial as opposed to Amnesia (the only game in the list worthy of winning), Rockstar Crap Redemptation has as much of a story as Bad Company 2 has...but hey, who am I kidding? You gave GTA4 more than a 2 so you know as much about games as a virgin knows about sex.

I personally really enjoyed playing ME2 and its presentation was amazing, but its storyline is somewhat plain and little too predictable (not much twist or surprises) to be the best pick for story award.

Even if it's inevitable for most RPG stories to be predictable, ME2 story seems to lack details to enrich story,

My guess is dev team streamlined its story, too. Giving up good part of good story substances just like other RPG elements...

I'm really surprised Mafia 2 got nothing. I loved Mass Effect and Red Dead but I really think Mafia should have won this.

Red Dead Redemption? Best story? It's just a consistent tease that lasts 50 hours until you reach a lousy anticlimax. And the bonus ending is just pathetic.

Nice. I thought for the middle instalment in a trilogy ME2 had a great story and really set up Mass Effect for an epic conclusion. RDR's wasn't bad but I think the high quality of Marston's character distracted me from the really quite simple story.

Wow, even gamers themselves can't choose the game with the best story by voting...once again, popularity contest.

I thought Heavy Rain was better but ME2 is still a worthy winner.

Mass Effect 2's story was actually pretty terrible, but it was told well.
