It's been nearly 10 years since the U.S. war in Afghanistan began back in October 2001. Journalists and photographers flocked to Kabul and Tora Bora as the first bombs fell. The iPhone had not yet been invented; it would be another three years until anyone knew what Facebook was. Back then, Afghanistan was a war of necessity, a war of revenge. A decade later, Osama bin Laden -- the erstwhile target of the U.S. invasion -- is dead. The Taliban are dispersed; but still potent, still deadly. And we're almost five generations into the world's favorite smartphone.
The mission in Afghanistan, of course, has changed: from the foremost matter of national security to something more nebulous -- a war of counterinsurgency and nation-building. In these 10 years, Foreign Policy has spent a great deal of column inches and pixels on the conflict -- publishing dispatches and analyses, photo essays and commentary. But in this unique collection of photographs, largely taken on iPhones using an app called Hipstamatic that allows users to digitally manipulate "lenses," "flashes," and "film stock," we found something exceptionally powerful: a record of the lives of U.S. Marines in Helmand province in 2010 and 2011 and of the Afghans they interacted with. It is by no means a comprehensive look at 10 years of war, but it is an evocative and profound slice of life -- at the beginning of the end of the longest conflict in U.S. history.
This experiment in photojournalism comes to FP by way of Teru Kuwayama and Balazs Gardi, who embedded with Marine Battalion 1/8 in Helmand for five months starting in September 2010. They collaborated with three other photographers on a project called Basetrack -- a multiplatform, social-media cornucopia; a hybrid of digital maps and feeds, Facebook posts and musings, interviews and stunning photographs. We're pleased to share their remarkable images with our readers.

the photos do tell the story by themselves and there is much to this then what the politicians say and what we hear on the news. i'm glad that they've started trying to get the Army back home. Alot of life has been lost which shouldn't have in the first place.

About as stupid of a comment as I've ever seen. You're even more ignorant than Breivik himself.

well, those are some beautiful pics, you can't deny it.
I saw a great article about the paralegal certification and the writer of bylandorsea.org said himself that in wars and love, there are no rules and the photos that are taken are impressive most of the times. Yes, there are laws and and there is school and people with degrees, as well as legal assistants and lawyers, but you must admit it - it is beautiful.
Take the time to look at first-byte.com and you will see for yourself how great it can be and read Mark's opinions on the subject.

these comments are revealing
The aesthetics of war do present a clear and present disconnect.
Kribet is on the money but there is a place for photography and it's not a new one either. The comments here do reveal the disturbing smell of Kribet's "fetishized" reaction along with more disturbing views that confoundingly see a justification for the Norway massacres. Wow.
If the subjects of these images were being draped in silver jewelry to get that aesthetic, I'm sure we would all be horrified. But as long as the images are "true" I think it is far better to see them than to hide them.
But I do welcome Kribet's warning which I'm not sure is coming from the images as much as it comes from the comments.

Images of war
What a touching tribute to the guys that gave their lives to our country that we live in. I'm from Australia where we believe in friends or what is known as mateship. Seeing the image on the left with the soldiers in the cave reminds me of our Australian troops in the war in Afghanistan.
If you look into the eyes of the child on the right, you can see a look of desperation. Maybe this is a rant, but when will man kind ever learn we need to start building bridges of love and not war.
My two cents.

The War in Hipstamatic
In my opinion
PJs have always been all about integrity. Portraying things as they are, and trying to involve themselves as little as possible in the process. Obviously this is hard,
because for better or worse there is no such thing as objective photography.
However, this goes beyond composition, suggestive angle, and decisive moment.
This is a deliberately subjective interjection by the photographer. If you want to shoot with your hipstamatic app, great. But keep it in your personal portfolio, don't send it to the photo editor. Newspapers are for news, not art.

Hipstamatic
According to wiki:
Hipstamatic is a digital photography application for the Apple iPhone. It uses the iPhone's camera to allow the user to shoot square photographs, to which it applies a number of software filters in order to make the images look as though they were taken with an antique film camera. The user can choose among a number of effects which are presented in the application as "lenses", "films" and "flashes". Several of these are included with the application, while others need to be purchased separately.

I also just read a very interesting book caled the lone survivor. This was written by a navy seal that was fighting in Afghanistan. There main beef with what was going on was that the Rules of Engagement were all out of wack. The US service man wre not authorized to fire on anyone, not even obvious taliban insurgents unless they wre fired on first. This is ridiculous our soldiers are put in harms way because of a politician back in washington this is just ridiculous!

Obama needs to reduce the presence there extremely slowly and carefully. The Taliban need to be terminally wounded and the Afghan army empowered first.
