Wikileaks Live Blog

More than 250,000 US diplomatic cables are now online after WikiLeaks published its entire collection unredacted.

We've asked you to help us find stories contained in the cables, and we are now sorting through your confidential responses and writing about some of them on this blog.

A US diplomatic cable alleges that prisoners who rioted in Syria's Seidnaya prison in 2008 had been trained to fight American soldiers in Iraq.

The document, released by whistleblower website WikiLeaks, quotes a Syrian rights activist as saying that after some of the prisoners were re-arrested upon their return to Syria.

"Feeling that their service warranted better treatment" from authorities, "the prisoners staged two riots that led to the death of many military personnel", the cable claims.

Amnesty International says 52 prisoners went missing and another 22 were killed after government forces went in to control the violence says Clayton Swisher from Al Jazeera's Transparency Unit.

Wikileaks has released 250,000 un-redacted US embassy cables, most of which were classified.

While the hundreds of thousands of documents are being sorted through, these are some of the highlights of what have been found first.

US analysts searching for Iranian activity in Yemen.

"WASHINGTON ANALYSTS ARE INTERESTED IN IRANIAN PRESENCE AND ACTIVITIES IN YEMEN, AND POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS TO UNREST THERE, IN RESPONSE TO POLICYMAKER INTEREST.  AS POSTS' TIME AND RESOURCES PERMIT, ANY FURTHER INFORMATION ON IRAN\'S RELATIONSHIP WITH AND INTENTIONS TOWARD THE GOVERNMENT, HUTHI REBELS, AND/OR THE SECESSIONIST GROUPS IN THE SOUTH WOULD BE VERY VALUABLE, AS WOULD INFORMATION ON CULTURAL, BUSINESS, AND RELIGIOUS TIES BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES, PARTICULARLY AS IT RELATES TO THE QUESTIONS BELOW."

Syria willing to enter into direct peace talks with Israel, once Israel met its conditions on the June 4, 1967 line. Syria hoped the US would take a lead role in these negotiations and act as a guarantor once an agreement was reached.

"FM Muallim replied the Syrian government welcomed the U.S. administration\'s positive messages on comprehensive peace.  President Asad had urged visiting diplomats and leaders to support President Obama because of his genuine commitment to regional peace.  Asad had even told Iranian President Ahmedinejad on April 5 that Syria would continue to pursue peace discussions with Israel. "The Iranians don\'t like it, but they recognize that we have the right to pursue what is in our national interests," Muallim said....Muallim expressed concern, however, that the U.S. seemed to be sending mixed signals to Syria.  He asked what was behind the U.S. philosophy of inviting Jordanian King Abdullah, PM Netanyahu, and President Mubarak to Washington, while sending Special Envoy Mitchell to Morocco and Secretary Clinton to Lebanon. "We're involved in the Arab-Israeli conflict.  We assure you we\'re ready to move now if the Israelis are," Muallim said. "We approve of Obama's declarations on comprehensive peace and a two-state solution.  What else is needed?" "

Wikileaks, the whistle-blowing website, has published its entire collection of diplomatic cables on the internet.

This is a decision its original media partners have strongly criticised.

The website said on Friday that the more than 250,000 US diplomatic cables could now be accessed through an internet link without a password.

"RELEASE CABLEGATE2: 251,287 US embassy cables in searchable format," said a message on Wikileaks' Twitter account.

Critics say the release could put the thousands of people named in the secret memos at risk.

Muammar Gaddafi is making solid gains in the Maghreb - rapprochement with Algeria, and slowly strengthening his ties with neighbouring African states. His self-confidence is rising.

"QADHAFI CONTINUES TO DIGEST THE LESSONS HE LEARNED FROM OUR AIRSTRIKE IN 1986.  HE CANNOT COUNT ON OUTSIDE SUPPORT IF HE GETS IN DIFFICULTY BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN TO OUT OF STEP WITH HIS FELLOW ARABS.  TO REMEDY THIS WEAKNESS IN HIS POSITION, HE HAS BEEN EAGERLY RESPONDING TO ALGERIAN OVERTURES FOR HALF A YEAR.  WHILE HE HAS ON OCCASION STARTLED THE ALGERIANS WITH TOO AVID A COURTSHIP--HE HAS SETTLED INTO MORE DURABLE STEPBY-STEP MILITARY, BUSINESS AND \"PARLIAMENTARY\" EXCHANGES.  HE HAS MET ALGERIA\'S INSISTENCE THAT HE RENEW RELATIONS WITH TUNISIA.  HE MAY EVEN HAVE ARRESTED THE EROSION OF RELATIONS WITH MOROCCO BY MONEY AS WELL AS WORDS CRITICAL OF THE POLISARIO."

Saad Hariri responds to Ambassador's demarche on the danger of Syrian transfers of increasingly sophisticated weaponry to Hezbollah by saying he feared that Hezbollah had "new technology". Speaker of the House, Nabih Berri, dismissed the message as "Israeli propaganda".

"Hariri opined that the only way to avoid conflict in the region was to keep open the \"two windows\" of the Syrian and Palestinian peace tracks with Israel.  Doing so, he said \"would freeze Syrian thinking on weapons transfers,\" but should both windows close simultaneously, Syria would stand by Iran in a war.  If there were peace, he assessed, Syria would move toward Turkey.  Hariri recommended that Secretary Clinton telephone Turkish FM Ahmet Davutoglu to seek his intervention with Syria on the issue of weapons smuggling.....For his part, Speaker Berri asked the Ambassador if the U.S. message was related to Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak\'s visit to Washington.  He stated that the message was "not new."  Israel received weapons from the U.S., and Hizballah received weapons from Iran, Berri declared flatly. "All this propaganda" reflected \"Israeli concern about the Iranian nuclear issue,\" he believed. Japan Drilling Company renewed contracts to supply two rigs in Iran's South Pars gas field in 2008-2009, causing concern over sanctions violations.

"Okada said a preliminary review of the Japan Drilling Company's (JDC) activities in Iran, based on reports that appeared in a February 8 article in Platts, found the company's investment amounts to only 400,000 yen.  Okada said JDC entered a contract to supply two rigs to service South Pars in 2003, and the contract was renewed in 2008-2009, information that came to light when the company recently went public.  Okada added that JDC appears to be a private company.  Okada also asked for additional information on the Iran Sanctions Act's definition of investment, noting that Japan imports crude oil from Iran, but it is difficult to know "where to draw the line." The ADCM stressed the issue is not so much about the letter as the spirit of the law and the risk of enabling Iran to use such deals to resist pressure to comply with international obligations.  Okada agreed this is a "very sensitive, important time" in dealing with Iran and said he would look into the matter carefully and make a "best effort" to convey concern to JDC. US Ambassador profiling the most powerful families in Azerbaijan, where observers note that Azerbaijan is run in a manner similar to the feudalism found in Europe during the Middle Ages.

"First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva (born Mehriban Pashayeva) is no doubt the most famous member of this clan, playing multiple roles and holding multiple titles. Aside from being the President's wife, she is President of the Heydar Aliyev Fund, which proclaims to be a humanitarian organization constructing schools, hospitals, and youth centers, among other projects. These projects provide a constant array of goodwill photo opportunities and advertisements for the First Lady, as she cuts ribbons on new schools and cultural centers. The Fund has its critics, however, who claim that it often fails to provide continued financing for the operation of these projects. Much funding seems to be geared towards efforts to explain Azerbaijan's side of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, for example in the form of books, brochures and other materials describing what they call a "genocide by Armenia" in the town of Khojali.....The Pashayev women are known to be fashion-conscious and daring, far more so than the average woman in majority- Muslim Azerbaijan. First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva appears to have had substantial cosmetic surgery, presumably overseas, and wears dresses that would be considered provocative even in the Western world (reftel). On television, in photos, and in person, she appears unable to show a full range of facial expression. The First Lady and her two daughters hosted Second Lady Lynne Cheney for dinner in September 2008. Prior to the Second Lady's arrival, while the three ladies were waiting for Mrs. Cheney's car, one Secret Service agent asked "which one of those is the mother?" Emboffs and White House staff studied the three for several moments, and then Emboff said, "Well, logically the mother would probably stand in the middle." "

Maldivian president, foreign minister, and defence minister all agreed that stronger relations with Israel were in the Maldives' interest.

"The Defense Minister said, \"If Palestinians, Egyptians, and others can have relations with Israel, so can the Maldives. We share the same concerns about religious extremism.\" These comments came on the heels of similar public pronouncements by Maldivian officials.  At a September 15 press conference, Foreign Minister Shaheed announced that Maldives was strengthening ties with Israel.  Shaheed emphasized that Maldives wanted to have diplomatic relations with all UN countries and remarked there had been no record of Maldives cutting off ties with Israel.  He hoped that strengthening existing business relationships with Israel would encourage more Israeli investment in Maldives.  Shaheed was also hopeful of getting Israeli expertise in the fields of medicine and agriculture.  Further, the FM said Israel expressed interest in providing assistance to the Maldives."
