SFWA MusketeersFortius Stylus Gladio, Sed Prudens Ambos Portat
The SFWA Musketeers formed as an unofficial group of SFWAns who also like to fence. The auxiliary includes non-fencing SFWAns, and non-SFWAns who want to help the Musketeers. The SFWA Musketeers are not sponsored by SFWA, and are not officially connected to that organization in any way. Our goals are to have fun, promote ourselves, our books, and SFWA, and to raise money for the SFWA Emergency Medical Fund. Our original strategy for doing that as to dress up in flamboyant costumes and put on a show at the Chicago Worldcon in 2000 and beyond. This event involved some acting and some fencing, with the emphasis on entertaining the audience, not competing for Best Fencer.
The SFWA Emergency Medical Fund offers interest-free loans to members facing unexpected medical expenses. The primary fund-raising activity is a series of auctions given at SF conventions around the country. The committee has auctioned off autographed books, manuscripts, screenplays, and other collectibles donated by authors and publishers, as well as manuscript critiques by editors, characters in forthcoming books named for the high bidders, and unique items such as one of Isaac Asimov's bolo neckties. The fund has grown impressively since we began the auctions, but today's high medical costs mean that we must continue to raise money. There'll be a SFWA EMF auction at a convention near you -- here's your chance to pick up a one-of-a-kind collectible, and support a worthy cause at the same time. Those who wish may make donations to the SFWA Emergency Medical Fund by PayPal, below, or by sending a check payable to SFWA EMF to SFWA, P.O. Box 877, Chestertown, MD 21620-0877. Please note: Donations to the EMF are not tax deductible at this time.
