SEGA announces new Sonic racer

DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
by Tom Bramwell

SEGA has announced Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing for DS, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii, due out in early 2010.

It sounds a bit like Diddy Kong Racing: SEGA characters including Sonic, Eggman, Tails, AiAi, Amigo and others race each other in cars, planes, motorbikes and, in AiAi's case, a banana mobile.

As well as the requisite shortcuts, obstacles, power-ups and weapons, there are also All Star moves for each character, including Super Sonic, Banana Blitz and Tails Tornado.

And if you don't want to play on your own you can engage in multiplayer for up to four people in split-screen or eight players online.

Check out the first Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing screenshots and debut trailer for more.

It could be better than them trying to make a platformer I guess!

Could fill the gap of "fun cart game" on PS3 and 360, if its half as good as mario kart.

Bad: Sonic Karting game.
Good: Developed by Sumo.

Bad: Sega's marketing somehow think "Its huge variety of characters and vehicles, plus the ability to play both online and off set it apart from other games of this type" is a statement that is not completely ridiculous.
Good: Appears from random developer comments elsewhere on the internet to be based on the Outrun engine.

So I'm really not sure what to think of this but am willing to keep an open mind.

It would be nice to have a large collection of sega characters, much like the super smash bros. Put in the guys from golden axe, streets of rage, ristar etc. I'd like to have seen Jack from madworld put in to the title!

Yeah, lets hope that they put some different characters in too and not just roll out the Superstars Tennis cast again.

OK so they have milked sonic half to death. But if, and with a big IF, its half as good as any Mario Kart, I cant see anyone complaining.

Somehow this reminds me of the Sonic Drift Racing games on the GameGear...

If it is a decent karting game and doesnt RRP at 50, i'd give it a go. Would save having to whip out the GC for Double Dash with my housemates.

SEGA, this stopped being funny a long time ago. If it were a group of MPs heading up your company, they'd have all admitted fault and quit years and years ago.

I too hope this will feature more than the Sonic cast. I've never understood why Nintendo always stick to the Mushroom Kingdom cast for anything other than Smash Bros or why Sega do the same with the Sonic cast... Other than the superstars of each lineup, the characters are largely insipid wastes of space. Waluigi anyone?

There must be. Those who keep allowing Sega to make the shovelware that his games have become.

If they don't work out a way for Ecco the Dolphin to have a kart I'll be very disappointed.

If you're worrying about it being all Sonic Characters - the clue is in the name that it won't be. They've revealed a fraction of the cast - and the locations :)

Think SST crossed with OutRun - plus some extra stuff we can't mention yet, and you're heading in the right direction :P

What an appalling title - surely that will change to just 'Sonic' or 'Sega', not both!

It looks a hell of a lot prettier than Sumo's own F1 game at any rate.

The world needs a competent Mario Kart clone. We've not seen one since the N64/PS1 days with Diddy Kong Racing (before they ruined the DS conversion) and the original Crash Bandicoot karting game. Even the actual Mario Kart (double dash and wii) is a shadow of its heyday.

I'd sooner see a new Fighter's Megamix myself. Bring back the Fighting Vipers cast, chuck them in with the Virtua Fighter characters once again and add a load of other Sega characters for good measure. The Streets of Rage and Golden Axe linueup will do for starters.

I second the Fighters Megamix suggestion, at least with Virtua Fighter Sega still has a track record of being good.
