When Will My Postpartum Swelling Go Down?

I gave birth to my son in June, and started the exercise portion of Run Your Butt Off about four weeks later. Three weeks into the program I started feeling pain in my ankles and knees, and my ankles started swelling. I continued to increase the length of time running, despite the pain and swelling. My husband, who is a paramedic, told me I needed to stop exercising until the swelling went down. It is now two weeks later and my ankles are still slightly swollen, but the pain is gone. After walking on my treadmill today at a speed ... Read More >>

Why Is My Groin Swelling?

I am a 64-year-old man who has been experiencing some intermittent swelling on the left side of my groin. After a CAT scan and an ultrasound, a hernia has been ruled out, but doctors have no real answer as to what’s causing it, and no solution beyond ibuprofen to reduce swelling and inflammation. I’ve been running two to five miles most days for nearly 30 years. Any thoughts about my condition? - Don Dear Don, You have had the imaging tests that should provide an answer. I am not sure if you are having swelling alone or swelling and pain. The groin ... Read More >>

When Is It Too Hot to Run?

When the hot, humid air mass camped out over the Midwest last week and then moved east to put a stranglehold on the coast, runners, group leaders, and race directors asked me many times, “When is it too hot to run?” Unfortunately, this is not a straightforward question, and the answer varies for individuals and groups. On an individual basis, we each bring to the table a set of circumstances that determine our heat tolerance, and we can make the decision to run or stay put. That decision affects only our own health, not the health and well-being of others. ... Read More >>

Help for a Painful Hip

Please help! My left hip (gluteus) hurts after I run. Also, I have a throbbing on the outside of my left hip joint. I've stretched, used a foam roller, iced, etc., but it's been like this for almost three weeks. Hysterectomy and Running

I recently had a hysterectomy. I am concerned that running could cause incontinence. I have not had an issue with that in the past. My doctor told me my bladder looks good; it's still in the right place. I don't want to pick up running and suffer issues with incontinence down the road. What would you advise? - Runmomrun1969 Running after a hysterectomy should not be a problem once the surgical site is healed. Running should not cause incontinence and your risk of experiencing incontinence is probably less without your uterus in place. The uterus “sits” on top of ... Read More >>

Will Running Harm My Child?

My husband and I have run with our daughter since she was six months old. She is now 3 1/2. Recently, she has decided that she wants to run with us. At first I thought it was cute--she goes into her bedroom and puts on her "running clothes." She will jog about six blocks and then get into the stroller. She will often want to get out and go a little more during our run. Now, she wants to do this every time--we only run together on weekends. I do want to encourage her to live a healthy life style, ... Read More >>

Am I Destined to Be Slow Because of Asthma?

I am a 25-year-old severe lifelong asthmatic who took up running several years ago to help with my breathing and overall health. Now that I've started running events, I have noticed one problem: I can't get any faster. I usually only run about 10-15 miles per week, but even after regular training for my last half marathon (20+ miles per week), I couldn't make it faster than 11 minutes/mile on average. I'm 5'2" and 138 pounds, which I know isn't svelte, but I've seen people heavier than me run faster. It's not like I want to compete, but I can't ... Read More >>

Could I Have an Infection in My Heel?

I was wondering if plantar fasciitis could bring on a fever. My foot is killing me, and I have a slight fever and headache. Could there be an infection in my heel? I noticed something that felt like a bone spur six months ago. It took a major turn for the worse when I started stretching and icing it. It's much worse in the morning but now lingers all day. Should I be totally off it? Can I continue to run? Spin?  - Linda Linda, I do not associate plantar fasciitis with fever, but I do know the process can be ... Read More >>

I Know We Slow Down as We Age, But…

Dear Dr. Roberts, I am a 56-year-old male. Over the past five years my running pace has slowed down two minutes per mile and my max heart rate has dropped. My body feels very weak; I really notice it in my legs. My resting heart rate is in the lower 40s, my cholesterol is 120, and my blood pressure is good. Before I slowed down, my HR was between 40 to 190 beats per minute. Now I struggle to hit 160. Before, my HR on an easy run was around 135; now it's around 112. My stride frequency is still 180 ... How Will 'Hallux Rigidus' Affect My Running?

I've just been told that the joint in my big toe on my right foot is essentially worn out. I have what is called "hallux rigidus" -- a progressive arthritis with the cartilage gone from the joint. The toe on the left foot is not quite as bad because I have had limited flexibility in that toe joint for about 10 years due to an injury. The doctor advised me to have a procedure that basically fuses the first metatarsal joint together. What is your knowledge of this procedure? What are the long-term effects on running? I’m 53 and have ... Read More >>
