Event table notes

Event data
Place: London
Start date: July 1851
End date: Aug. 1851
Feenstra Kuiper, Di Felice and Alberti give +5-2=0 for Anderssen; Di Felice also gives as a separate result, +5-4 for Anderssen. The Chess Player's Chronicle (1852, vol.13, p.281) mentions 'the games which were played at the Divan between Anderssen and Löwenthal'. Spinrad gives +5-2=1 or +5-1 or +5-2 for Anderssen, depending on sources, and also cites Wayte as giving a score of +5-2 for Löwenthal and cites Delaire as giving +5-1 for Löwenthal and says that Sergeant was sure this was not a formal match. The Chess Player's Chronicle (1851, vol.12, pp.225,263,331) gives 7 games between these two players, with result +4-3 for Löwenthal. The Chess Player (vol.1, 2 Aug. 1851, p.18) gives a draw between them. These game results (totalling +4-3=1 for Löwenthal) do not correspond to any of the results given by Feenstra Kuiper, Di Felice, Wayte or Delaire. I will assume they refer to the same set of games, that they were informal and that Löwenthal won +4-3=1. I assume also that they took place in July or Aug. 1851, after the International tournament and before Anderssen's departure. Note that Anderssen may have had a win against Löwenthal in the abortive all-play-all tournament (see the Illustrated London News, 4 Oct. 1851, p.411). If this were one of the games given in the Chess Player's Chronicle, this would alter the result.
