HPV -- Let the safety challenges begin
By Cynthia A. Janak

This is just getting too good to be true. We are now having people challenging other people over the safety of a vaccine. I would have never believed in my wildest dreams that this would happen. This is a great day for vaccine safety.

Bloomberg is running this article today. Bioethicist Bets Bachmann $10,000 on HPV Vaccine Link to Damage, September 15, 2011, 1:15 PM EDT, By Michelle Fay Cortez.

Here is the paragraph of interest. "Bioethicist Art Caplan is challenging Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann with a $10,000 bet to prove a claim that a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer caused mental retardation."

Now first what I am going to do is give everyone the definition of mental retardation from MedlinePlus.

Mental Retardation: Mental retardation is a condition diagnosed before age 18 that includes below-average general intellectual function, and a lack of the skills necessary for daily living. (I posted all that apply and that was the majority.)

Symptoms:

  • Decreased learning ability

  • Failure to meet the markers of intellectual development

  • Inability to meet educational demands at school

  • Lack of curiosity

Complications vary. They may include:

  • Inability to care for self

  • Inability to interact with others appropriately

  • Social isolation

Risk factors are related to the causes. Causes of mental retardation can be roughly broken down into several categories:

  • Infections (present at birth or occurring after birth)

  • Chromosomal abnormalities

  • Environmental

  • Genetic abnormalities and inherited metabolic disorders

  • Metabolic

  • Nutritional

  • Toxic

  • Trauma (before and after birth)

  • Unexplained (this largest category is for unexplained occurrences of mental retardation)

This small paragraph is of interest also. "It's ethically obscene," Caplan said today in an interview. "The stakes are too high to try to get political advantage by putting young women's lives at risk."

Dr. Caplan I agree with you 100%. We should not be "putting young women's lives at risk." We should be protecting them from harm so they can take care of their families. Live productive lives and who knows maybe go on to find the cure for cancer. (I know there is one already but don't want to say it too loud...lol)

I believe we and I mean all of us have the responsibility to protect the people of this nation to be able to have "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" in their lives.

To experience Life you need your health. Would you agree Dr. Caplan?

To have Liberty means the ability to go and do things that are meaningful to you. Would you agree Dr. Caplan?

To be able to Pursuit Happiness would be to have goals, dreams and aspirations for a future of active productivity. Would you agree Dr. Caplan?

I have a challenge for you, Dr. Caplan. I want you to put your money where your mouth is and pay the transportation costs to and from your facility for 20 families of affected young girls, women or boys that meet the criteria that I have stated above. Are you game? I am willing to find them and get them to come to you. Give me a day.

Here are some videos of young people affected by the Gardasil™ vaccine. Enjoy but have the tissues handy. This is just the tip of the iceberg. If you want more I can get them.

If you want to know if the vaccine is safe ask the families of those who are disabled or are angels in heaven.

Dr. Caplan I would hope that you are good to your word and give Ms. Bachmann the $10,000 to her favorite charity. Thank you for your gift.

At this time I want to thank Gov. Perry again for getting into the presidential race. If it were not for you none of this would have happened. Gardasil would not have been an issue as to the safety of vaccines. The debate on this issue would never have happened. You have made many, many families happy because this is now on national and world news.

Thank you Governor Perry for doing nothing but doing more than you know.
