::::::::: Overview  ::::
Emory University Hospital is a tertiary/quaternary care facility specializing in the care of the acutely ill adult. Staffed exclusively by School of Medicine faculty who are also members of The Emory Clinic, the 587-bed hospital is renowned as one of the nation's leaders in cardiology and cardiac surgery, oncology, transplantation, and the neurosciences. Emory University Hospital has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of "America's Best Hospitals" 10 times since the magazine's Best Hospital rankings began in 1990. Committed to patient care, teaching, and research, Emory University Hospital has established a solid foundation for outstanding quality healthcare, leadership, and medical integrity for Atlantans and the Southeast.

::::::::: Service  ::::
Since opening a full-service emergency department in September of 1997, the Emory University Hospital emergency medical physicians have provided high-quality, cutting-edge care for our 28,500 annual patients in this 20-bed facility. The emergency department provides care to many patients of The Emory Clinic as well as patients seeking care from the local community. Many patients with complex illnesses seek care only at the Emory University Hospital emergency department leading our physicians to admit roughly 30 percent of our patients.

The emergency department is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is staffed with emergency medical physician and nursing specialists at all times. Our emergency department staff is committed to providing you with the highest quality of care in a private, comfortable setting. Located in the heart of the Emory University campus, we provide access to a number of specialists located at The Emory Clinic for complex medical and surgical problems.

We cooperate with a nationally recognized cardiac care program, a regional stroke center, and a leading infectious disease department supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Yerkes National Primate Laboratory to care not only for the common medical concerns of the community, but for the most critically ill population in the region.

In 2006, the Emory University Hospital emergency department opened a five-bed clinical decision unit (CDU) to provide state-of-the-art care for patients requiring prolonged care. The CDU is staffed by a associate providers 12 hours a day with direct supervision by attending Emergency Medicine physicians. The CDU specializes in the evaluation and treatment of cardiac emergencies, but more than 20 protocoled diagnosis may be placed in this unit for evaluation, monitoring, and treatment.

Plans are currently being finalized for a new emergency department with groundbreaking in 2007. This new 30-bed state-of-the-art facility will be placed in the expanded footprint of the old Emory University Hospital emergency department. It will provide an expanded area for the care of critically ill patients and a new express care area for minor injuries and illnesses.

::::::::: Teaching  ::::
Senior Emergency Medicine residents practice Emergency Medicine at the side of board-certified Emergency Medicine attendings in a unique one-to-one relationship eight hours a day. The emergency department is staffed with five Emergency Medicine attendings per day, providing double coverage 16 hours per day. In addition, there is one mid-level a day who provides 12 hours of coverage for the CDU and facilitates the care of patients with minor illnesses and injuries. With close supervision, this setting maximizes resident education while continuing to provide the finest care to our patients. In this setting, residents are able to experience quarternary care in an academic emergency department and provide care for complex medical patients, becoming comfortable caring for problems such as organ transplant, oncologic, and complex cardiac, and neurologic emergencies.
