Dean Appoints Credentials Committee Chairs

With the race for the Democratic presidential nomination looking more and more like it will be decided at the Denver convention this August, I thought I'd bring attention to a news item that sort of slipped under the radar with out a whole lot of people noticing.

On January 14th, the Executive Committee of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) quietly met in Denver, Colorado to vote on confirming Howard Dean's nominations for Chair of the Convention Credentials Committee along with his 25 Party Leader & Elected Official (PLEO) appointments.

Chairing the 2008 Democratic National Convention Credentials Committee are some familiar names. Alexis Herman, James Roosevelt, Jr. and Eliseo Roques-Arroyo will be heading up the committee that will determine whether the delegations from Florida and Michigan are allowed to vote at the convention in August.

You may know Alexis Herman and James Roosevelt, Jr. as they are the co-chairs of the DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee.  The DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee was the panel that stripped Florida and Michigan of their national convention delegates.

Also, pursuant to Article VII of the Call for the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Howard Dean nominated and the DNC Executive Committee confirmed the following 25 Party Leaders & Elected Officials (PLEOs) to serve on the Credentials Committee:

Dean Aguillen
Don Beyer
Allyn Brooks-LaSure
Jose Ceballos
Ralph Dawson
Sheila Dixon, Mayor
Christopher Edley, Jr.
Hartina Flournoy
Maryscott "Scotty" Greenwood
Janice Griffin
Adelita Grijalva
Laura Harris
Kathy Hoyt
Carol Juneau, State Senator
Scott Maddox
Iman Malik Mujahid
Maria Neira
Kate O'Connor
Carol Pensky
Bob Rogan
Leila Sahar
Marc Stanley
Michael Steed
Jane Stetson
William Straus, State Representative

Re: Dean Appoints Credentials Committee Chairs

I read about this.  Supposedly, he picked people whose loyalty is to the national party, not to their state parties.  Preparing for the reinstatement of Florida and Michigan.

Very interesting

What is your take on these appointments? I notice right off that two out of three chairs have ties to the Clinton Administration, as do several of the other members. One of the members is from Florida. Another is a voting rights activist. Others are affiliated with the teachers unions. Many of the others are hard to figure in terms of possible orientation vis a viz Clinton/Obama. Again, what do you think?

I think we should focus...

...On the credentials committee members allocated to the presidential candidates from each state.

Re: I think we should focus...

Do you know anything about them? Please, I would be very interested to hear any info. you have on this. This is the kind of nuts and bolts stuff that really matters, and is hardly ever mentioned in the discourse.

Re: Dean Appoints Credentials Committee Chairs

This committee would rule in the DNC's favor, but that would then be pushed to the floor of the convention to be voted on, which is where it would be decided, if that's needed.

Re: Dean Appoints Credentials Committee Chairs

I know that you are an expert. Can I ask you what makes you so sure that the Committee will back the DNC?

so the delegate winner pre-FL/MI would...?

end up as the nominee, unless some delegates switch sides?

Essentially, whichever candidate has the more delegates will end up getting the rules set up for their candidate?

Or could this ultimately come down to the handful of Edwards supporters to decide?  Perhaps he will be the kingmaker, after all.

Beyer is all Obama

Don Beyer is from Virginia, and he is Obama's National Finance Co-Chair.  He has been with Obama from the beginning.

His wife, Megan Beyer, is on a "Women for Barack" committee in Virginia, or something to that effect.

They own several auto dealerships in Virginia selling Volvo and Subaru cars.

i thought i remembered reading

Somewhere that the candidate with the most delegates heading into the convention was going to be able to determine who is on the credentials committee. Or is it that s/he decides whether they will follow the ruling of the committee? thanks for any answers.

Too bad

Dean whupped Ickes -- and everyone else's -- ass, huh?

Elections have consequences... even elections for party chairmanship.

Re: Too bad

Except elections for superdelegates, which your fellow Obama supporters seem to regard as illegitimate.

Re: Too bad

And, except for elections in Michigan and Florida that don't go the way Howard Dean wanted them to.

Dean Appoints Credentials Committee Chairs

There's a surprise. So was the DNC Rules committee that threw out the rulebook and stripped Florida and Mich of all their delegates in a blatant effort to rig the nominating process.
