HK Int'l Airport, SkyCity Marriott Hotel

Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Sky City Marriott Hotel is conceived as one of the major developments within the Sky City Development on the Hong Kong International Airport Platform. The building is located next to the Asia World Expo and the future Sky Pier. It is designed as a convention hotel with recreation services.

Located on the edge of the Airport platform, the hotel is under strict height restriction and the brief required the architect to fit over 650 keys on a narrow site. With a floor to floor height of 2.975m, the design demanded full integration with structural, building services engineers and the contractor early in the conceptual design stage.

The project goal is to design and construct a sustainable design fit for the site. The planning of the hotel is based on a crescent shape that maximizes the magnificent sea view towards Tuen Mun and Tsing Ma Bridge. All the hotel rooms are designed as standard modules that facilitate modular construction and prefabrication. Up to 80% of the building is prefabricated off-site to reduce construction wastes that include floor slab, beams and columns, staircases and façade elements. Areas of windows have been maximized to exploit the open sea view. To compensate extra energy consumption through heat gain, large sculptural 'wing shaped' sun shading fins forms an important architectural element that serves as a design statement and an energy saving feature. These sculpted projections capture light and shade animating the façade with articulation and movement to the entire elevation.
