Narrative Description The light tower on St. Martin Island is the only example of a pure exoskeletal tower on the Great Lakes. The six-sided tower is supported by six exterior steel posts which have latticed buttresses that rest on a concrete foundation. The tower extends fifty-seven feet to the base of the watchroom which is eight feet high and is surmounted by the round cast iron lantern with helical bars across the glass panels. The structure measures seventy-seven feet from the base to the top of the ventilator ball. The lens is a Fourth Order Fresnel manufactured by Barbier, Benard and Turenne of Paris. The station includes a two-story, rectangular brick keeper's dwelling and a rectangular brick fog signal building. Both have gabled roofs.
