Bio

Maya Roth received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in Dramatic Art. She is professionally active as a theater artist and scholar. Roth's theoretical interests concern creative re-visionings of theatrical and civic space. Roth's specializations include modern drama, contemporary women playwrights, theories of performance, and space-based criticism. For two years, she coordinated the Jane Chambers Playwriting Award for graduate and emergent feminist playwrights and she currently serves as Associate Editor of the Women and Theater newsletter. Her recent presentations to inter/national forums (live and published) concern imp/migrations in the plays of Timberlake Wertenbaker, comparative representations of space, gender and power in women's solo performance and Shakespeare's Anthony and Cleopatra in the 1980s, and the environmental theater of the Omaha Magic Theatre. As an award-winning director/dramaturg, standout projects include Our Country's Good, the West Coast Premiere of The Years, Rockaby, David's Red-Haired Death, She Talks to Beethoven, and The Trestle at Pope Lick Creek. Roth will join the Georgetown faculty in fall 2002.
