The Daniel Foundation Makes Lead Gift
The “UAB All Steinway School”

Yakov KasmanA generous gift from the Daniel Foundation is helping the Department of Music achieve the rare honor of becoming an “All Steinway School.” This will make UAB the first university in Alabama to receive this distinguished designation, which is held by such renowned music institutions as the Juilliard School, Curtis Institute, Oberlin College Conservatory, and the Yale School of Music. Yakov Kasman, Assistant Professor of Music and Artist in Residence, performs worldwide only on Steinway pianos.

Martha Stone Cobb Daniel, the late widow of R. Hugh Daniel, enjoyed music throughout her life and had a love for the excellence of Steinway instruments. The directors of the Daniel Foundation have chosen to support the “UAB All Steinway School” project as a way to honor the memory of Mrs. Daniel and her desire to support education and the arts in Birmingham.

“The Department of Music is on an upward trajectory and ranks among the best in the state for undergraduate study in the performing arts,” notes Bert Brouwer, M.F.A., dean of the School of Arts and Humanities. “The ‘All Steinway School’ designation adds luster to this reputation and reinforces our determination to provide our students the high-quality educational experiences they have come to expect from a nationally recognized institution such as UAB. We thank the directors of the Daniel Foundation for their recognition of the faculty and students of the Department of Music and their desire to create an ‘All Steinway School’ at UAB.”
