The event, sponsored by the e-XPO Exhibition, attempted to cut through the hype surrounding doing business on the Internet. As David Moore, Dell's European Internet Business manager put it; "A bad e-idea is still a bad idea". IIA chairperson Frances Buggy spoke on the rapid growth in IIA membership since its formation in 1997. The IIA hosts six events on average per week between Dublin and its regional chapters in Kilkenny, Cork and Galway. The conference's keynote speaker was Dr Gerhard Huber, chief executive of Enba plc, who flew in especially to speak at the conference. Mr Huber was responsible for the concept and the launch of Europe's first Internet-only bank, first-e. Every website, he said, should have the goal of getting listed in people's bookmarks as most people only view a very limited number of sites. He said his company had immense difficulty in gaining acceptance from the banking and regulatory establishment in Europe, but this simply was an obstacle that had to be overcome. Other speakers included Ivan McDonald, the founder and CEO of eWare, and Raomal Perera, managing director of Network365. The majority of companies attending (71%) already have an ebusiness strategy in place, while nearly 90% said ebusiness would be very important to their business over the coming two years. The second wave of ebusiness (eBusiness2) combines customer relationship management, contact centres, web centres, and high performance Internet. This will take ebusiness beyond simple transactions and enable companies to initiate and manage ongoing profitable relationships with customers. In terms of implementing eBusiness2 strategies, 83% of companies said that the availability of a unified network, applications and customer interaction solution will be very important. Speaking at the launch of the guide, SFA chairman Kieran Crowley gave a broad welcome to the forthcoming legislation governing ecommerce. However he warned that the legislation must create confidence among business so that the necessary legal, infrastructural and fiscal measures are developed in order to turn Ireland into a world leader for ebusiness. A recent SFA survey revealed that 17% of small companies are trading online. The same study shows a significant increase in the number of Irish small firms accessing the World Wide Web. Over the last 12 months this has increased by 20%, and 87% of small firms now have Web access. However the SFA is concerned that over half those questioned have no intention of introducing ecommerce over the next 12 months. Ecommerce currently accounts for less than 10% of revenues at 75% of the small companies that are trading online. Market analysis conducted by Forester Research estimates that the Irish electronic commerce market will be worth more than IR410m by 2001. UL RECEIVED EXCELLENCE AWARD - At the Institute of Personnel and Development conference last weekend Minister for Finance Charlie McCreevy awarded the Department of Personnel and Employee Relations at the University of Limerick the status of Centre of Excellence. Given in recognition of achievements in teaching, research and developing links with the profession, this is the first such award to an Irish university. OVERSEAS PLACEMENTS FOR MARY IMMACULATE STUDENTS - Six teacher training students from Mary Immaculate College in Limerick have completed their third year in-service placement in South Africa. Organised with the help of the Sisters of Mercy and South African Education Minister Dr Kader Asmal, the placements included three in Soweto and three in the North West Province. LIMERICK STUDENTS UNDETERRED BY FAILURE - A group of students from UL attempted last week to launch the first liquid-fuelled rocket from this country, but had to accept defeat, however temporary. The 6.5ft rocket, which took two years to build, was to be powered by a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and kerosene but the flare failed to ignite the mix and the rocket remained firmly on the ground. The students had hoped that it would reach a height of 5,000ft and travel at a speed of 264 metres per second. The students were accompanied to the testing site in Co. Offaly by Niall O'Byrnes of the Students for the Exploration and Development of Space. PROTECTING SILAGE FROM BIRDS - A PhD STUDY - The study of damage to silage bales by birds has been chosen as his PhD subject by Kieran McNamara from Co. Clare, who is currently based at the Teagasc Grange Beef Research Centre in Co. Meath. Results of his research so far reveal that the plastic covered bales should be stored on their ends, away from recently harvested fields, and the only effective deterrent in the way of graffiti is a large eye painted on each bale. A survey was carried out on 300 farms and 64% of them were found to have suffered damage to bales, mainly from crows, rooks and jackdaws. AWARD FOR DUBLIN SCIENTIST - Professor Lochlainn O Raifeartaigh of the School of Theoretical Physics at the Dublin School for Advanced Studies has been awarded the Wigner Medal, an international award which will be presented to Prof. O Raifeartaigh in Russia in July. According to the citation, he received the award for his work on relativity theory and particle physics. OPEN UNIVERSITY CONFERRING DR A.J.F. O'REILLY - At the conferring ceremony held in the O'Reilly Hall in Belfield last weekend the Open University awarded an honorary doctorate to Dr A.J.F. O'Reilly FIRST NATIONAL MARITIME COLLEGE TO BE ESTABLISHED - Minister for the Marine Frank Fahey and his predecessor announced that a maritime college, the first in Ireland, is to be constructed at Ringaskiddy on Cork Harbour in which some 422 merchant marine and Naval Service students will be trained annually. The IR30m facility will be jointly administered by the Cork Institute of Technology and the Naval Service. This was first announced in October 1998 but at that time the plan was for a IR15m investment in a college which would cater for 120 students. THREE GENERATIONS NAMED AS SCHOLARS - With the awarding of a Scholarship in Mathematics to Oliver Nash at Trinity College this week continues a family tradition that was started by his grandfather in 1934. In that year John Nash was a Scholar in Medicine, while his son Charles became a Scholar in Theoretical Physics in 1968. Oliver, from Rathfarnham in Dublin, was also presented with the St Patrick's Benevolent Society of Toronto prize for the best performance in the annual scholarship examinations. SUMMER PROGRAMME LAUNCH FOR UU - University of Ulster has launched its brochure for Talks & Tours 2000, a series of residential and day excursions to places of interest all over the country. Included in the residential trips are a weekend on Tory Island in north Donegal, and a visit to a number of houses and gardens in the Irish midlands. The Day Tours take in a number of locations in the North and there is also a series of lectures at the Flowerfield Arts Centre in Portstewart.
