Hutchison, Constantine Advance In King Co. Exec Race

In the race for King County executive, the Associated Press said former KIRO-TV anchor Susan Hutchison advanced to the November election with 37 percent of the vote.

She'll face King County Councilman Dow Constantine, who had a 22 percent in yesterday's primary against three other opponents.

During a speech to his supporters, Constantine took shots at Hutchison, saying she was too conservative, too out of step for the mainstream values of King County and that he was more qualified.

At her camp, Hutchison blamed Constantine for much of the financial peril the county is currently facing.

"Now I ask you, can we trust our future to the same politician that helped create the mess that we're in? No," said Hutchison.

Hutchison lead a very large, loud crowd at her election party Tuesday night and continued her message that big financial cuts are needed in King County government.

"We've got to behave at the county level, the way all our families and all of our businesses are behaving in these tough economic times," Hutchison said.

Hutchison raised some eyebrows when she admitted some cuts could be looming for King County union employees.

"I need unions to work with me. I'm going to have a union liaison in my office and we're going to work together, because you either cut jobs or you cut pay and benefits."

Hutchison said that by capturing 37 percent of the votes so far, voters have made a statement.

At his camp, Constantine went on the offensive.

"My opponent is nothing but platitudes and recycled right-wing sound bites," he said. "Being a celebrity is not a qualification for the position."
