New town centre places with some famous old West Cumbrian names

WORKINGTON’S first three new street names have been erected in Washington Square after being picked by Times & Star readers.

The signs for Risman Place, Ivison Lane and Steelmen Walk were put up this week following a competition to suggest the names.

From the hundreds of entries received, covering the town’s heroes and heritage, a short-list of eight was chosen and put to the public vote.

The people of West Cumbria picked out Gus Risman, Dale Campbell-Savours, Billy Ivison and the steelmen of Workington for the honour.

The names were suggested by Joan Wilkinson, of Infirmary Road, Workington, (Dale Campbell Savours) Alison Adair, of Flimby, (Steelmen) Mary Francis, of Newlands Lane, Workington, (Risman) and Billy Ivison’s granddaughter, Joanne Wright, of Islay Place, Workington.

Risman Place is the road that the flagship Debenhams store will front onto - running from the centre out towards Washington Street.

Ivison Lane runs to Pow Street and Steelmen Walk stretches to Jane Street.

The fourth street name, Campbell-Savours Way, which will stretch to Murray Road, will be put up later this year, when the road is completed.
