Military Cross Medal

A VIKING section commander who was killed as he went to the aid of a wounded guardsman has had his extraordinary bravery acknowledged with the award of the Military Cross.
A/Cpl Matthew Stenton (RDG) was called into action when his colleague was injured in a cordon and search operation.
Realising the soldier needed an immediate evacuation, the committed soldier expertly manoeuvred his vehicle 150 metres towards the insurgents, firing his machine gun as he went and buying precious seconds to aid the extraction.
The casualty was moved into the back of the Viking but as he continued to provide cover A/Cpl Stenton was fatally shot.
His citation reads: “A/Cpl Stenton’s gallantry was of the very highest order and he made the supreme act of self-sacrifice to save a comrade’s life.”
