There will be no Endless Horror. But there will be constant nausea

Feigned intrigue

A fake issue of Novaya Gazeta made its way around Moscow on Friday. On the front page was a giant portrait of Vladimir Putin. The intrigue of anticipating a second term for President Dmitry Medvedev also turned out to be feigned: everything proceeded according to a scenario that could be described as extremely banal, not to mention humiliating for the current head of state. Putin is running for president, and that’s not all – he has been nominated by Medvedev, who is running for prime minister, as he tentatively heads the pre-election list of United Russia...

In having taking care of Mikhail Prokhorov, the political manipulators have whittled the Kremlin’s project Pravoye Delo (Right Cause) down to almost nothing

By not allowing their projects to free themselves from the corridors of the presidential administration, housed in the same building that was once home to members of the Politburo and regional committee secretaries, the inspectors from the administration are not giving controlling politicians the chance to become elected politicians. An example is Pravoye delo party from Leonid Gozman’s times. But as soon as a politician like Prokhorov stops playing by their rules, builds up charisma that, theoretically, would allow him win elected office, he is liquidated...

Putin’s Golden Tick

Putin’s Golden Tick

An Internet poll gave him a resounding victory in the Greenpeace-organised Enemy of Baikal competition; the Golden Tick award went to the prime minister for winning the competition. To mark Putin’s triumph, scuba divers planted a commemorative sign on the bottom of Lake Baikal right next to the Baikal Pulp and Paper Plant’s (BPPP) waste-discharge pipe. Greenpeace says that the banner, listing off the competition’s three finalists, was put up “with the hope that the prime minister, having himself already dove to the bottom of Baikal, would halt the plant’s operations and dive down to remove the banner”...

How much is one head? How much is one head?

By Natalya Radina, Charter 97

The situation in Belarus is a repeat of 2008 when, after the EU and the USA imposed sanctions, Lukashenko began to release political prisoners he had arrested during the 2006 elections. As a result, in early 2009, the dictator got an IMF loan that saved the country from default. For two years, the West tried to tame the Belarussian strongman by inviting him to all sorts of summits, and EU officials shook hands with “Europe’s last dictator”.

Since the “Bloody Sunday” of 19 December, the situation has been developing in the same direction. Faced with an economic crisis, Lukashenko again is trading off his political prisoners.

Prime Minister’s cronies reach out to school canteens Prime Minister’s cronies reach out to school canteens

A massive scandal has broken out in Moscow. Several days before the start of the new school year, directors of dozens of Moscow schools (we have confirmed information about forty) received an odd directive: sack all their catering personnel and dismantle all the equipment. The reason was that the tender to provide school meals had been won by a company called Сonсord, but its triumph turned out to be a failure...

Russian biathlon teams’ dismal performance Russian biathlon teams’ dismal performance

There were no high hopes on the eve of the biathlon championship in Yugorsk in Khanty-Mansiisk (see Novaya Gazeta No.22, 2 March 2011), but reality was worse than the gloomiest forecasts: our squad was lucky to place sixth (the male team...
