Fall Harvest Jamboree

Sunday October 2, 2011

Halloween in ColumbusFall brings cooler temps, changing leaves and...more festivals! This month there is Halloween merriment, fall fun and celebrations of the arts. One of my favorite events is the Fall Harvest Jamboree put on by the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department.

This event always has great activities including a hay ride, pumpkin patch and straw maze. Kids get to pick out their very own pumpkin and the best part is admission is FREE! Parking is $5 which is a small price to pay for so much fun. My family and I go every year and I can tell you from experience families should plan for extra time at the petting zoo. So many cute little animals! Also, try to hit the event before the Ohio State game starts, the attractions get crowded after the game lets out.

Other festivals this month include the Columbus Italian Festival, Circleville Pumpkin Show and the Ohio Film and Music Festival. The Italian Festival has a world record meatball and the Circleville has record breaking pumpkins - sounds like a banner month for Central Ohio!

New Albany Classic Invitational and Family Day

Wednesday September 21, 2011

New Albany Classic Invitational This weekend tween hearts will flutter and Columbus area families will venture out to the home of Les and Abigail Wexner to celebrate the 14th annual New Albany Classic Invitational Grand Prix and Family Day to raise money for the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence. Over 15,000 people are expected to attend the festivities that will include a big time concert with Big Time Rush.

Oh, oh, oh oh oh...

The concert starts at 11 a.m. and they are joined by New Hollow and Greyson Chance. If screaming at the appearance of color coordinated crooners is not your thing, there are plenty of other family activities including carnival rides, arts and crafts, pig races, dog shows and opportunities for kids to try their hand at archery.

In addition to the concert, the Grand Prix will command the attention of everyone as top riders compete in the international sanctioned event. Keep an eye out for the six Olympians:

September 11th in Columbus Ohio

Saturday September 10, 2011

World Trade Center recovery from September 11, 2001Where were you? How did you find out?

Ten years later people still ask that question. I think it's a bit of therapy, talking about how life changed. So many of us were doing ordinary things - sending the kids off to school, heading off to work, running errands...That is part of what makes the day's events so extraordinary. A ordinary day that went so wrong.

After talking with a lot of people about what they were doing then and how they'd mark this 10th anniversary I have found that people still have that community spirit that surged in the days after the attack. Many plan to volunteer in community service projects, others plan to honor our troops and first responders. Here a few of the events in the Columbus area this weekend:

Kevin McGuire 9/11 Memorial Concert
September 11, 2011
Sunday 3 p.m.
$30
Columbus Museum of Art
480 E. Broad St., Columbus
614-221-4848
Kevin McGuire, Broadway star of Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, and The Secret Garden performs with The David Tolley Trio in "A Celebration Of The American Spirit." Proceeds go to the 9/11 memorial fund.

Columbus Area Labor Day Events and Activities

Thursday September 1, 2011

Columbus Labor Day activities.

Good Bye Summer! The hundreds of school buses making the daily trek to and from school started the slow death of the fun season while Labor Day Weekend throws dirt on it. All that is left is Christmas items going on sale in stores...wait...I just saw that today!

The 90 degree temps this weekend belie the simple truth - soon it will be time to bring out the sweaters and get ready to hunker down. BUT before we say goodbye, let's get in a few good thrills:

Greek Festival - Experience the Greek culture with food, music, history and more.

Short North Gallery Hop - A monthly treat, check out the the sights, sounds and fun of the Short North neighborhood.

Sunbury Antique & Flea Market and Ox Roast - The name says it all! Hit the area for shopping and ox!

This is also the last weekend for free admission to the Columbus Museum of Art. Don't miss it!
