Five for Friday: Get Rid of the Stink, Very Different Twins, Hash Brown Casserole, Room, How Do You Do It

Friday September 30, 2011

It's Five for Friday! Another week has come and gone; I'm looking forward to a nice, fall-ish weekend. Can you believe it's going to be October already? What are your plans this weekend? Leave a comment and let me know what's on your agenda ... or what's on your mind. Here are five things on my mind this Friday.

1. What's That Smell? One of the things I do not miss about having baby twins is the stench of the diaper pail. We used a diaper genie, which cut down on the smell somewhat, but hooooo boy did it raise some stink when it came time to clean it out. Ugh! Given that twins mean double diapers, these tips from About.com's Guide to Babies should be required reading. How do I keep my diaper pails from smelling so bad?

2. Room - I'm reading the most fascinating book for my book club. It's called Room and the author is Emma Donoghue. I can't put it down! It is written from the point of a five-year-old, and the author does such a good job of capturing the innocence and wonder of that young mindset.  If you're looking for a good read, check it out.

3. Very Different Twins - This week I read about a set of twins in the UK who are verrrry different. It's incredible enough that the 18-year-old twins were the third set of twins in the family. But what makes these twins really stand out is that one is black and one is white. One takes after Dad, with dark skin and curly hair, while the other has mom's pale skin and light hair.

4. Ham & Hash Brown Casserole - I tried a new recipe for dinner this week, and it seemed to be a hit with everyone! Even my picky eater! However, I have to qualify that by saying that we had a big thunderstorm and a power outage right before dinner that night. She was eating in the dark, and she probably didn't notice the sneaky vegetables in this dish! She gobbled every bite, though, and I think that's a good sign. See if it works for your family: Ham-Hash Brown Casserole.

5. How Do You Do It? - I've mentioned this blog before, but wanted to shine a light on it again because it remains one of my favorite places to read perspectives from fellow moms of twins. They've recently brought aboard some new voices and the conversation just keeps getting better.

Parent's Poll: What Do You Do With Your Twins' Clothing After They Outgrow It?

Monday September 26, 2011

One of the great disadvantages of multiples is an inability to utilize hand-me-downs from sibling to sibling. Since they generally wear the same size clothing in the same season -- except in some cases where twins are different sizes -- parents of twins end up with a double dose of wardrobe that is quickly outgrown. What do you do with all that clothing?

Five for Friday: New TV shows, Sweet & Salty Caramel Snack Mix, Pinterest, Home Haircuts, Language Crusaders

Friday September 23, 2011

It's Friday! Friday is always such a welcome day of the week, but I wish it would stick around a little longer. For some reason, I feel really ready for the weekend this week. Here is this week's Five for Friday: five things that have caught my attention or are on my mind.

1) New TV Shows: Hip hip hooray for the start of a new television season! I'm always excited to see new episodes of my favorite shows, like The Middle, Modern Family, and The Office. And the Dancing with the Stars cast has another twin connection this season. How long do you think Nancy Grace will stick around? I'm also interested in some of the new series that are making an appearance. Ringer is about a set  of twins; Sarah Michelle Geller plays both characters. Revenge seems to have some promising intrigue; I bet there will eventually be some plot twist involving twins on that show!

2) Sweet & Salty Caramel Snack Mix: I made this for my twins when they hosted a meeting at the house this week. If you like the combination of sweet and salty in your snacks, you will love this! Yum!!

3) Pinterest: It's like a virtual bulletin board! I was forever bookmarking things that I wanted to save, but then forgetting all about them. Pinterest organizes and displays them so attractively. And it's so much fun to follow other people and find inspiration from their pins and boards.

4) Cut Your Kids Hair at Home: I have always been too chicken to try hair cuts at home, but when I think about how much money I could have saved over the years, I think I should try it! With twins or multiples, this is a great way to save some big bucks. Check out this article from About.com's Guide to Stay-at-Home Moms for tips on how to do it yourself.

5) Language Crusaders: What do you think about marketing campaigns that use tricky spelling or incorrect punctuation in branding their products? Like the "RiDQulous" commercials for Dairy Queen as an example. Do you think its clever or does it drive you crazy? This article takes a look at the trend (and makes it pretty clear how I feel about it!)
