Verbs that don't stand alone, ones that need another verb to function, are known as
auxiliary verbs. For example, the
he in "
he hablado" is an example of an auxiliary verb.
Haber a verb whose forms include the
he in the sentence above, is the most common auxiliary verb in Spanish. But there are others.

Here's another example of why you can't simply translate words to Spanish using a dictionary — context is vital. Look at these three simple sentences:
- I hurt myself.
- I did it myself.
- I myself went to Madrid.
The "myself" in the first sentence is an example of a
reflexive pronoun — the subject of the sentence and the person affected by the verb (known as a
direct object) are the same person.
But "myself" doesn't indicate a reflexive usage in the other two sentences. This concept is explained in our lesson on reflexive pronouns and verbs. Read More...
