Preston North End have secured the services of left back Steven Smith on a free transfer from Norwich City.

The 26-year-old signs on a one-year deal at the Club with the option of a further year.

Smith, who will take the number 14 shirt, spent the back end of the 2010/11 season on loan with SPL outfit Aberdeen where he clocked up 16 league appearances.

Smith comes to Deepdale with UEFA Champions League experience under his belt with Scottish champions Glasgow Rangers, where he began his professional playing career in 2002.

After eight years with The Gers, Smith moved on to Norwich City where he experienced promotion to the Championship in his first season.

Delighted with his move, the former Scotland U21 said: "I found out about the move on Tuesday night and now I'm delighted to be a Preston North End player.

"I'm primarily a left back who can play in left midfield. It is a position I enjoy playing, I like to get forward and enjoy a tackle.

"From the first moment I met the manager I knew this is where I wanted to come. Phil is the kind of manager who players' want to play for and I'm glad to be here.

"I can't wait to make my debut for the Club and if he picks me to play against Scunthorpe then I will give it all that I have got."

Smith will heavily eleviate manager Phil Brown's concerns of having no natural left back in the camp and will go straight into the squad for the trip to Scunthorpe on Saturday.

Commenting on the move, Brown said: "We have been looking for a natural left footed player to come into the Club and I'm delighted we have got someone with the calibre and pedigree of Steven Smith.

"We have been looking to strengthen the left back position for some time and I'm delighted we have managed to secure the services of Steven.

"Former Preston manager Craig Brown has given me some great advice about Steven and we have decided to bring him in.

"Steven now has to get up to speed with the fitness levels of the present squad and I'm looking forward to working with him."

Preston chairman, Maurice Lindsay, added: "I'm delighted that we have been able to strengthen our defensive squad.

"Clearly with his top level experience at Rangers, Steven will add substantially to Phil Brown's selection options.

"We are doing everything we can to strengthen the squad for what is a lengthy season but as all our supporters know we are working to the salary cap restraints imposed on us by the league."
