Viewers Come Back for ER Finale

April 3rd, 2009

After 15 seasons and countless cast changes, NBC’s long-running hospital drama ER closed its doors last night, and it didn’t go out with a whimper.

According to ratings released today, the final episode of ER was watched by 16.3 million viewers, its biggest audience in three seasons. It was even a significant ratings jump over an episode in March that saw the much-anticipated return of former show star George Clooney.

While the numbers for ER were impressive, they don’t put the show’s finale anywhere near the list of top series-ending episodes ever. In recent years, Friends pulled in around 52.5 million viewers for its finale, while the Seinfeld farewell was watched by 76 million, just 4 million short of the Cheers finale. Of course, these are all completely overshadowed by the Goliath of series finales — M*A*S*H, which had most of the country, 106 million people, tuning in to watch the final episode on Feb. 28, 1983.

January 23rd, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Inside the L.A. home of ER star Parminder Nagra, and photographer James Stenson, friends and family gathered to watch the couple wed in a Sikh ceremony, known as the "Anand Karaj" on Jan. 17.

The translation, "blissful union," was fitting, as the British-born couple, who are expecting their first baby this summer, merged traditions from the East and West in a daylong celebration of dancing and music.

Parminder, 33, whose parents are from the Punjab region of India, and James, 34, were blessed by an Indian priest in the afternoon, then moved to the Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills for a civil ceremony officiated by Parminder’s recently ordained ER castmate Maura Tierney.

Two of the NBC show’s other stars, John Stamos and Scott Grimes, offered their services in the form of a wedding band, their gift to the couple.

Guests dined on Indian- and British-inspired dishes like beef tenderloins and vegetable samosas, while being entertained by the Indian dance troupe Bollywood Step.

George Clooney to Return to ER!

January 21st, 2009

Calling all ER fans! George Clooney IS returning to the show that made him famous!

Entertainment Tonight has confirmed that the tall dark and handsome star will put on the scrubs once more as Dr. Doug Ross when he shoots scenes for an appearance on ER Thursday and Friday of this week.

Clooney’s return to the long-running show was the subject of controversy from the get-go. Producers wanted him to come back, but said they weren’t holding their breath.

"We’ve talked about it a couple times. If he stops by and wants to do it, he’ll do it," said ER creator John Wells recently.

Clooney rose to fame as Dr. Doug Ross on the show, which premiered in 1994, and last appeared in 2000. The long-running show is ending its 15-season run this year.

OK! Exclusive: Parminder Nagra Marries!

January 17th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Congratulations to Parminder Nagra and her new husband, photographer James Stenson, who were wed on Saturday afternoon in Hollywood.

The happy couple, who have been together for seven years, were married at 3:45pm PT in an intimate ceremony before friends and family at an elegant private home in the Hollywood Hills. The wedding itself was a traditional Sikh ceremony known as "Anand Karaj," which translates into "blissful union."

In December, the 33-year-old British-born actress announced that she and James were expecting their first child together this summer, soon after ER ends its historic 15-season run on NBC.

As for her post-baby career plans, Parminder said at the time, "I feel like I will want to work, but who knows what I’ll feel like when the baby arrives."

Clooney to Return for E.R. Finale?

January 16th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

With long-running hospital drama ER heading into the end of its 15-year run on NBC, fans of the show would love nothing more than for former star George Clooney to put on his scrubs and make one final appearance as broodingly handsome Dr. Doug Ross.

Alas, say the show’s producers, you probably shouldn’t count on that happening.

"George is very busy and very handsome. He’s just finishing up in Puerto Rico on a film," ER creator John Wells told reporters while promoting his just-announced NBC drama Southland on Thursday. "We’ve talked about it a couple times. If he stops by and wants to do it, he’ll do it."

That being said, Wells admits there’s always a possibility his handsome former leading man could surprise everyone. "George loves practical jokes, so who knows?"

ER to Stay on Three Episodes Longer

January 9th, 2009

Good news for ER fans: apparently NBC’s long-running hospital drama, creaking into its 15th season, just isn’t ready to flatline yet. The network has extended the final season by three episodes as part of a deal with Warner Bros. TV and ER’s executive producer, John Wells, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

In addition to the extension of ER, the deal says that Wells’ new show, cop drama Police, will deliver six episodes of the show to NBC. The network and WBTV had been negotiation back and forth over the new drama, with the producers uneasy at NBC’s limited primetime needs. Jay Leno’s next talk show project will be airing at 10 p.m. every night next fall.

So don’t mourn the doctors of County General just yet, there’s still life in this old show!

What’s replacing ER?

November 4th, 2008

We’ve all got our hankies out for what promises to be the poignant final season of ER.(Anthony Edwards returns! Neela and Ray finally do the nasty!)

But as one good thing comes to an end, something beautiful is destined to take its place.

According to Regina King, it will be the new cop series LAPD, which was greenlit to the pilot stage this past summer.

“It’s taking ER’s place,” Regina told me at the third annual Black Girls Rock! Awards at NYC’s Lincoln Center Sunday night. “It’s ER’s last season, so we would follow in its time slot.”

Nice, except for one little detail. According to Regina, the show can’t be called LAPD!

“With the NYPD and FDNY, someone ran that into the ground with hats and T-shirts, and the LAPD didn’t want that same thing happening,” she explained. “So a couple years back, they patented their name. No one can use it, and we can’t use.”

Such a bummer! So who does Regina play on the yet-to-be-renamed Los Angeles-inspired cop drama?

“I’m playing a D2, a second level detective. We learned everything [real cops] had to learn to get to where they are,” Regina shared. “I feel like a kin to them, even if they don’t look at me that way.”

Regina also revealed that L.A. provides an endless well of stories to dramatize on the series.

“Just the other day, this lady was in a high-speed chase on the freeway. Her car went out of control and flipped over 3 or 4 times. When they got to the car, she was butt-naked. Only in L.A.!”

And that’s just fine with the rest of us!

Dr. Greene Returns to ER

October 30th, 2008

Calling all original ER fans! NBC has announced that Anthony Edwards will be returning to the long-running show, reprising his role as Dr. Mark Greene for one episode of the final season. Wait–didn’t Dr. Greene die at the end of season eight?

Edwards will appear in the episode titled "Heal Thyself", airing Nov. 13. It’s a dream come true for the show’s producers who had hoped to celebrate ER’s long-running success by bringing back the original cast.

"We had hoped to bring back some of ER’s stars for the final season and think that our loyal fans will enjoy seeing of of the show’s most beloved and memorable characters," said executive producer John Wells.

Edwards, a four-time Emmy nominee and Golden Globe winner, first appeared in the original pilot for ER (along with another now famous tall, dark and handsome actor). He continued on the show for nearly eight memorable seasons before completing his run in a highly rated episode at the end of the 2001-2002 television season.
