In the run up to this summers Beijing Olympics, Great Britain’s Women’s Artistic gymnasts faced some of the toughest possible opponents in reigning Olympic Champions, Romania, in an International competition in Ipswich. With Britain having qualified a full line up of gymnasts to compete in Beijing, yet with the selection not taking place until July 4th, this event is hugely important for all the British girls taking part, who look to impress the National selectors.

The challenge of 3-time Olympic Champions, Romania will truly be a great test for the British Team. The Romanians will be bringing some of the World’s best gymnasts to Ipswich, including World and European medallist Steliana Nistor.

The British line up included local Huntingdon based gymnast Marissa King, alongside team-mates, Beckie Downie, Rebecca Wing, Hannah Whelan, Laura Jones, Hannah Clowes and Imogen Cairns.

Team Event - Day One

The three times Olympic and seven times World Champions Romania, won the Friendly International meeting against the British Team on Saturday 14 June by exactly 5.00 points - 237.200 to 232.200.

While the host team competed without the 2006 World and European Champion on bars, Beth Tweddle, the guests were led by their best gymnasts, the world recognised stars Steliana Nistor, winner in the all-round with 61.00pts and Sandra Izbasa, third 59.20. The Romanian team, who regained their European title in Clermont Errand in France in April, also included Andreea Acatrinei, fourth 57.35, Andreea Grigore, fifth equal with Marissa King, 57.30, Daniela Druncea, eighth 56.85 and Gabriela Dragoi, ninth 56.55. Anamaria Tamirjan pulled out of the competition on the day.

Beckie Downie won the Silver medal in the all-round with 60.75 which is indeed an excellent achievement and a promise for the approaching Olympic Games. It was also good to see Imogen Cairns regaining her competitive form after a long break because of an injury, seventh place 56.95. Keyleigh Cook (10 AA) excelled on beam, Hannah Whelan (11 AA) on vault, Emma White (12 AA) on floor, and Rebecca Wing (who didn’t compete on floor), contributed strongest for the team’s score on bars.

Aparatus finals - Day two

On the second day of competition, Beckie Downie once again impressed with Gold on vault and a superb bars routine giving her 16.10 and Silver place just behind Steliana Nistor.

Sandra Izbasa claimed victory on both beam and floor.
