Warwick Castle, River Avon, Medieval Bridge, Lord Leycester Hospital

Warwick , Warwickshire

Warwick, built on a low hill above the Avon, is one of those towns that leaves a sense of wonder. Not just for the famous castle, the finest medieval castle in England, nor the soaring church tower, nor it's wealth of historic buildings, rather the atmosphere of the place, as if history was all there in one package.

Warwick was founded in about 914ad, by Ethelfleda, daughter of Alfred the Great, but following the Norman Conquest, it was the Beauchamp family, Earls of Warwick for over 400 years, that really gave Warwick it's character. It played a particularly important part in English medieval history, on account of Richard Neville, who succeeded to the huge estates, by marrying Anne Beauchamp. His dazzling political and military manoeuvres, in the Wars of the Roses, earned him the title of 'Kingmaker'.

A great deal of medieval Warwick was destroyed by fire in 1694, But while older buildings survived on the outer ring of the town, the 'new' buildings of Warwick, dating from the late 17th. and 18th. centuries are in profusion.
