Why did you choose to study at NEC?

“During my high school years in South Florida I studied with an NEC alum and member of the New World Symphony, Rhett del Campo. Hearing his experiences at NEC made me very interested in pursuing a similar conservatory experience. The deciding factors that made me choose NEC over other schools were Jordan Hall and Will Hudgins, my teacher here."

What do you like about studying at NEC?

“The best part of NEC's percussion department is how much all of the students perform. It can even be a little overwhelming at times. Getting to rehearse and perform often on the Jordan Hall stage between 5-10 times per week is an amazing feeling. It truly makes it feel as if it’s your home hall. Between orchestra, wind ensemble, and percussion ensemble, there is always a lot to do.”

What do you like about Boston?

“Boston is a great town. Having Fenway Park right down the street always offers excitement, especially during the playoffs. Also, being in the middle of downtown gives you the ability to escape NEC whenever you need a break. Everything is within walking distance.”

Can you think of a particular moment or experience at NEC that was memorable?

“During my freshman year, we were playing Shostakovich's 9th Symphony and during the dress rehearsal Maxim Shostakovich, his son, walked into the rehearsal and asked if he could conduct his father's piece. Watching his passion for his father's music and how the orchestra changed and responded to that was an unforgettable experience. You don't get to do things like that at many schools.”

What kind of impact has NEC had on you?

“NEC has brought me from being a musical hobbyist and turned me into a confident musician, while still helping me stay grounded by surrounding me with the most talented colleagues possible.”

George Nickson is the recipient of the Faith Phillips Perera Memorial Scholarship.
