Truck Information

Enforcement:
Truck Network and Restrictions:
Oversize/Overweight Permits:
The Oversize/Overweight Permits Unit processes single trip and annual permit applications for the movement of vehicle, vehicle combinations, and loads in excess of legal limits. Truck tractors with 53-foot trailers or twin trailers may also need reasonable access (see below).

Oversize / Overweight Permits

STAA dimensioned vehicles (truck tractors with and 53 foot trailers or twin trailers) are allowed up to three road miles from the North Carolina Truck Network (NCTN) for fuel, repairs, lodging, and destinations (depending on safety restrictions). For terminals and destinations beyond the three road-mile limit, reasonable access may be provided an application is submitted, verified, published, analyzed, and investigated. Reasonable access is terminal and vehicle combination specific, and any approval applies only to the requested vehicle combination and terminal. The State Traffic Engineer is the approving/disapproving authority. However, if no response is issued within 90 days of verification of the application then it is automatically approved. Please contact Lisa Avery at 919-773-2893 or if you have any questions.

Designation (53-Foot Trailers and Twin Trailers):
Routes not currently on the North Carolina Truck Network (NCTN) may be added to the network for use by one or more STAA dimensioned vehicles (truck tractors with and 53 foot trailers or twin trailers) on a regular basis without the need for reasonable access. Routes may be designated through a process that allows for a safety analysis and investigation of the requested route, public input, a review by appropriate county and municipal governments, and consultation with the Joint Legislative Commission on Governmental Operations. Designation is vehicle combination specific, and any approval applies only to the requested vehicle combination. The Board of Transportation is the approving/disapproving authority. Please contact Lisa Avery at 919-773-2893 or if you have any questions.
