Talking Point - Boy Racers

Car

Last updated: 29 April 2008

Are boy racers a problem in Welshpool and other towns in Mid Wales? Does something need to be done?Timothy Richardson thinks so. Add your comments to the debate.

  • Claire from Newtown made the following point in April 2008:

Claire:"I understand the issue of speeding and noise from Boy racers, but I do not think we should look at them as a problem and write them off as nuisance youths! There is little for young people to do in mid-wales, and these people have a common interest in cars which allows them to socialise. Lets find them somewhere to go, or as someone on here has suggested, hold organised cruises where the police can be present to keep peoples mind at ease. I have been on such cruises in Telford and they were very safe!"

Mac from Welshpool contributed to the debate in April 2008:

Mac:"I am totally fed up with the mindless youths who have nothing better to do than rev their cars and screech their tyres as they take off along Salop Road at all hours of the day and night. It's not big or clever - it is irritating and childish. Let's de-classify Salop Road from a trunk road and get some traffic calming measures in place."

Mike from Birmingham questions the point of faster cars:

Michael: "I don't and have never understood why the majority of us have to put up with the idiots that insist on acting like Starsky & Hutch in places where they should not. And I have never understood why we allow car manufactures to make cars that just keep getting faster and faster and we have to watch tv shows that show our police putting their lives risk and the general public. It's just mad to me, but what worries me most is the fact that nothing is done to control cars in either their numbers or speed. I am not Welsh but I love Wales and hope that this can be sorted in beautiful towns like Welshpool."

John Goode from Welshpool is unhappy about boy racers frequenting the town's car parks:

John:"I live very close to one of Welshpool's car parks and have to suffer hooligans in noisy cars sounding their horns and speeding round the car park with a great deal of noise. The carpark should be closed at night if no other measures are taken. Please!

Hugh from Plymouth suggests that the police mishandle the situation:

Hugh: Boy racers are everywhere, from the biggest city to the smallest village. The police turf us out of car parks and force us back on to the streets. If you want blame someone blame them for mishandling a situation. I organise cruises and events in the southwest for boy racers, I am a boy racer even at the age of 24. Its fun and very social...

Josh H from Welshpool explains why he is a boy racer:

Josh:"I understand Tim Richardson's worries but I am a boy racer and I only do this to meet new people with the same interest as me. We are not doing anybody any harm. Has anybody in this area been injured due to us? The answer is no."

Tim Richardson is extremely worried that nothing is being done about 'boy racers' in Mid Wales:

"I would like to express worry about the increasing number of speeding cars in and around mid wales. Recently my dog "shep" and cat "nancy" were narrowly missed by supposed "boy racers". I have repeatedly complained to the authorities about this yet still awaiting any kind of action and that was 6 months ago! I have decided to voice my problems on here in the hope that if any other people are experiencing a similar problem. I know the problem is very apparent around Foel and Welshpool, stretching towards the border as there are frequently accidents there."
