BDA Patron's Reception with Sebastian Coe

Image Sebastian Coe, Patron of the British Dragon Boat Racing Association (BDA) and Chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, attended a Reception at the House of Commons on Monday 19th February 2007.

This marked the start of the GB Dragon Boat Team's campaign to win Gold at the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships to be held in Sydney, this September and launched a new initiative in sport.

BDA officials revealed plans in support of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, with an ongoing country wide water-sports project designed to increase participation in both non-Olympic and Olympic sports, leading up to 2012 and to leave a legacy of sporting activity after the London Games.

Lord Coe has often said that London 2012 is not only about five weeks of summer sport but about encouraging more people to take up sport at all levels of competition.

The BDA project will introduce people of all ages and abilities to Dragon Boat Racing, a mass participation water-sport from China, where it has over 50 million devotees. At the same time participants will be encouraged to try other water-sports, through a series of Dragon Boat based introductory days, taking place throughout the UK.

The BDA hope to establish a link with Beijing 2008 through annual exchanges of Dragon Boat crews between the UK and China leading up to and beyond the Beijing Games in 2008.

The GB Women's Squad Coach, John Griffiths, was also at the Reception.  He recently received the prodigious MUSSABINI Medal for his high performance coaching work with the Women's Squad. Members of the medal winning 2006 GB Dragon Boat Team were also be present.
